Information All About Cats | ArticleEstates.com

For almost ten thousand years cats have been the most popular pet on Earth. They were domesticated for companionship and to hunt small household vermin. Cat?s natural hunting abilities are instinctual and most house-cats are able to feed themselves if left no other choice. Owners of these pets grow to love their animals because of their warm and loving nature. Finding new information about cats is always exciting as it gives us a new understanding of our feline friends.

All felines have whiskers. These long and sensitive hairs growing from their face are one of the most basic ways that cats understand or make sense of the world around them. The whiskers are extremely sensitive and respond to changes in air pressure and patterns. They even use their whiskers to sense whether or not they can fit through an opening.

Their senses of hearing, sight and smell are also extraordinary. Cats are able to see in much lower light than humans. Large pupils and reflective retinas give them night vision six times greater than our own. Their sense of smell is also incredible. The size of their olfactory receptors is twice that of a human. Cats sense of hearing is also better than both dogs and humans. They are able to hear higher frequencies in order to hear mice and other rodents.

Felines have personalities and their demeanor can vary from individual to individual. Some love to lay on their owners laps while others prefer to be pet and not held. This can also depend on the breed of the animal. Most cats are playful and energetic. Their natural hunting instincts are brought out when playing and they love attention.

There are many different breeds of felines. Some breeds are ancient and date back to when they were first domesticated while others are relatively new. All breeds share the same basic physiology and behavior. Some breeds are more likely to suffer from health problems than others and can be prone to specific diseases.

The average male cat will live for about twelve to fourteen years while females live about one or two years longer. Cats can suffer from a wide range of illnesses and diseases. Parasites, viruses, and cancers all occur in felines. Veterinarians offer vaccinations for some of the most common feline illnesses. Rabies vaccinations should also be kept up to date especially for outdoor pets.

Cats are great companions. They love attention and being around people. They are also fascinating animals with incredible instincts and powerful senses. Since the early days of civilization humans have cohabited with these animals and now they are more popular now than ever before.
