PanARMENIAN.Net - At least 14 people have been killed in a traffic accident on the outskirts of Moscow, the Russian capital?s emergency services confirmed, according to RIA Novosti.
The collision between a packed passenger coach and a goods lorry loaded with crushed stone took place in Moscow in the early afternoon on Saturday, the emergencies ministry said.
In a statement posted on its website on Saturday, July 13 afternoon, the emergencies ministry confirms that 14 people died in the accident and a further 22 have been hospitalized.
?Fire-fighters and rescue teams are working at the scene,? a Moscow emergencies ministry spokesman said.
Reports of the numbers of people involved vary, but according to reports in the local media the bus is thought to have been carrying over 40 people at the time of the accident.
Russia?s health ministry confirmed that 22 people have been hospitalized, 16 of them are in a serious condition.
The tabloid news site Lifenews has posted what it says is an eyewitness video from the scene of the crash showing a bus ripped in two and an overturned lorry.
A criminal investigation into the cause of the crash has been initiated, Russian officials confirmed.
ATLANTA (AP) ? The homicide rate for older children and young adults has hit its lowest point in at least three decades, but the decline has been slowing, according to a new government report.
In 2010, the homicide rate for victims ages 10 to 24 was less than half the rate seen in 1993, when there was an explosion in crime tied to crack cocaine.
The report released Thursday echoes earlier findings about a national decline in killings and other crimes, but offers a more focused look at what is one of the most affected groups. Ages 10 to 24 account for about a third of slaying victims. The highest homicide rates are consistently seen in people in their late teens and 20s.
"That's what drives the national numbers. That's the ballgame," said David Hemenway, director of the Harvard University's Injury Control Research Center. He was not involved in the new study.
There are various theories for the drop in youth killings and other crimes since the early 1990s, ranging from the economy to police work or public health campaigns. None completely explain the trend, said Hemenway, a member of a National Academy of Sciences' group examining crime trends.
For the report, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention searched a death statistics database that goes back to 1981.
About 4,800 youths ages 10 to 24 were killed in 2010, the most recent year in the analysis. That translates to a homicide rate of 7.5 per 100,000 people ? the lowest since 1981. It also appears to be lower than rates in the 1970s, a CDC spokeswoman said.
But it hasn't been a steady trend down. The rate dropped a bit in the early 1980s and then rose sharply, peaking at about 16 per 100,000 in 1993. It plummeted for several years before the decline slowed. The rate inched down about 1 percent a year, on average, from 2000 to 2010, the CDC found.
The study showed youth homicide rates fell across the board ? in males, females, whites, blacks and Hispanics. However, males and blacks continued to be killed at far higher rates than females or people in other racial and ethnic groups. The 2010 rate for blacks was nearly four times higher than the average for all youths that age.
The rate of gun-related slayings was about four times higher than of the rate of homicides using other weapons.
Based on overall rates for 2010, homicide last year fell off the nation's top 15 causes of death for the first time in almost half a century. It continues to rank among the top three leading causes of death for people ages 10 to 24, however.

Everyone knows that fish oil is good for you, right? It?s a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, which are marketed to reduce the risk of just about everything from heart disease to Alzheimer?s.
But a startling study shows men who have the highest levels of these compounds ? the kinds found in fish but not in vegetable sources ? have a higher risk of prostate cancer. Men with the very highest levels had a 71 percent higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer ? the kind most likely to spread and kill, they report in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
It might be a sign that popping a pill is not only possibly a waste of money ? it might be downright dangerous. And eating fish too often might be, also.
?These fish oil supplements in which some men getting mega, mega doses?in our opinion that is probably a little bit dangerous,? said Theodore Brasky of Ohio State University Medical Center, who worked on the study with a team from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle.
The same team published a study in 2011 that showed men with the highest levels of one omega-3 fatty acid called docosahexaenoic acid, DHA for short, had double the risk of high-grade prostate cancer. Other studies have had similar findings.
To try to confirm their work, the team looked at data from a different prostate cancer trial called SELECT, for Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial. That study showed 17 more cases of prostate cancer among men who took vitamin E alone for about five years compared to men taking placebos.
The effect was even stronger when they looked at omega-3 fatty acids ? specifically, the kinds found in fish oil as compared to those found in vegetable oils.
Brasky?s team looked at 834 of the men in the SELECT trial who developed prostate cancer, and 1,393 randomly chosen others from the trial who didn?t have cancer. They divided the men into four groups based on their blood levels of three omega-3 fatty acids ? EPA, DPA and DHA.
Those with the highest blood levels had a 71 percent higher risk of high-grade prostate cancer, compared to those with the lowest levels. Overall, their risk of any kind of prostate cancer was 44 percent higher.
The difference between the group with the highest levels of omega-3s in their blood and those with the lowest works out to about what someone would get by eating salmon twice a week, the researchers said.
Fatty acids found in vegetable oils, flaxseeds and other vegetable sources ? including alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) ? did not affect prostate cancer risk, the researchers found.
?A 70 percent increased risk in high-grade prostate cancer, given it?s the No. 1 cancer in men and fish is a commonly consumed thing and is thought to be a healthy food, I think it?d be a concern for people,? Brasky said in a telephone interview.
The American Cancer Society projects that 240,000 U.S. men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2013, and about 30,000 will die from it.
?We?ve shown once again that use of nutritional supplements may be harmful,? said Alan Kristal of Fred Hutchinson, who also worked on the study.
Brasky, who says he still eats fish ?but in moderation?, says the study cannot answer the question of how fish oil might cause cancer. They took into account other factors that might be associated with eating fish and Brasky notes that mercury, which can be found in fatty fish, doesn?t cause prostate cancer.
The study also doesn?t say anything about the effects of fish oil on men who already have cancer. ?This study is not about men with prostate cancer,? Brasky said, noting that some studies have suggested fish oil might be beneficial in men who already have cancer.
Men might be at a loss for what to do, as omega-3 fatty acids were also believed to lower the risk of heart disease, which is far more common than prostate cancer. The American Heart Association recommends that people with heart disease eat fish twice a week and people with heart disease might need fish oil capsules.
But the researchers point out that recent studies have shown taking extra omega-3 has little effect on heart disease ? including a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine in May.

Sur l'Optimus G la diff?rence la plus remarquable r?side dans le fait que LG a choisi de garder les softkeys en dehors de l'?cran, ce qui donne au final un mobile avec un ?cran qui fait r?ellement 4,7" et qui en outre conserve la touche menu ? la place de la touche multi-t?che. Je continue ? le chanter sur tous les tons, je trouve idiot le choix de Google d'imposer les softkeys dans l'?cran et la suppression de la touche menu au profit de la multi-t?che. Et je me retrouve donc ? d?fendre LG et Samsung par-rapport ? Sony (gamme xperia r?cente) et HTC (gamme des "One" X, S, One tout court...).

South African politics recently appears to be entering a period of flux. The opportunity for change is signaled by national icon Nelson Mandela?s serious illness. The media is regularly reporting that he is now on life support and South Africans seem to be reconciling themselves to his death.
Increasingly in recent years, he has been an important touchstone for the legitimacy of the governing African National Congress (ANC), especially as scandals involving party leaders have multiplied.
Indeed, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, second only to Mandela as an icon of the anti-apartheid movement,?compared the ANC to the old National Party?that imposed apartheid because the government of President Jacob Zuma was unwilling to issue a visa to the Dalai Lama, likely for fear of offending the Chinese.
Meanwhile, the media reports ANC scandals on an almost daily basis. The archbishop has said specifically that?he will not vote for the ANC?in the next elections. Furthermore, the Mandela family is feuding publicly even as their patriarch lies ailing, creating such a spectacle that the archbishop has?publicly pleaded?with them to stop airing their dirty laundry in public.
But, there are also signs of new growth. Cyril Ramaphosa, one of the architects of the 1993-94 transition to non-racial democracy, was widely thought to be hand-picked to be Mandela?s successor as ANC leader and president of the republic. When Thabo Mbeki became the party?s choice instead, Mr. Ramaphosa removed himself from politics and went into business.
He was highly successful and appears to have the confidence of both the domestic and international business communities. Often described as both ?brilliant? and ?highly competent,??he is now deputy president of the party. That makes him well placed to be Mr.?Zuma?s successor. One possibility is that before the next national elections in 2014, Zuma could step down as president but stay on as party leader. Ramaphosa would then be in a strong position to be the ANC?s presidential candidate. Many speculate that an ANC government under Ramaphosa would be very different from the current Zuma government.
The formal opposition, the Democratic Alliance (DA), dominates a single province, the Western Cape ? where Cape Town is located. The provincial premier, Helen Zille, Cape Town Mayor Patricia De Lille, and the party leadership generally are seeking to?expand the party?s electoral base?beyond its traditionally white and coloured (or mixed race) constituencies.
Its parliamentary leader is a young black woman, Lindiwe Mazibuko. They are particularly looking to make electoral inroads among the black middle class. They emphasize improved service delivery, clean government, and ?constitutionalism.? Her newly formed party, Agang SA, will focus on four areas where many South Africans believe the ANC has failed: the economy, education, health, and security. The DA shares many of her views, and she has been chided by some for not joining forces with them so as not to split the anti-ANC vote. But as veteran journalist Allister Sparks observes, under proportional representation, the percentage of votes that a party receives determines the number of seats it has in parliament. If both the DA and Agang SA do well and cooperate (as they are likely to), the ANC?s dominance in parliament could be eroded in this election and possibly end in the next ? scheduled for 2019. The ANC, however, will almost certainly continue to provide the executive.
Finally, Julius Malema, the former ANC Youth League bad boy, is talking about launching a radical, black political party. However, he faces fraud charges and may go to jail. Even if he does not, it is questionable whether he has the finances or organizational skills to launch a viable political party.

CAIRNS, Australia (AP) ? Australian police were mystified by a chaotic crime scene including a hole in the ceiling and a smelly pool of vomit-like liquid ? until they found the culprit was a 5.7-meter (19-foot) python.
The massive snake weighing in at 17 kilograms (37 pounds) was captured a day after a suspected burglary was reported at a charity store in Queensland in northeastern Australia.
"Its head was the size of a small dog," Police Sgt. Don Auld said Wednesday.
Before they found the python, investigators' working theory was that a human burglar with an appetite for destruction ? and a serious illness ? had gone on a rampage inside the St. Vincent de Paul store in the small town of Ingham.
"We thought a person had fallen through the ceiling because the roof panel was cut in half," Auld said. "When they've hit the floor, they've vomited and then staggered and fallen over. That's what we thought anyway."
Police now suspect the python entered the store through the roof, which was damaged in a cyclone two years ago.
The animal then plummeted through the ceiling, knocking over dishes, clothes and other items, before relieving itself on the floor. It somehow managed to hide from officials until staff spotted it lying alongside a wall the next day.
A local snake catcher was called in to capture the reptile, which has been relocated to nearby wetlands.

Johns Hopkins researchers link positive outlook to reduction in cardiac events such as heart attacks
People with cheerful temperaments are significantly less likely to suffer a coronary event such as a heart attack or sudden cardiac death, new Johns Hopkins research suggests.
Previous research has shown that depressed and anxious people are more likely to have heart attacks and to die from them than those whose dispositions are sunnier. But the Johns Hopkins researchers say their study shows that a general sense of well-being feeling cheerful, relaxed, energetic and satisfied with life actually reduces the chances of a heart attack.
A report on the research is published in the American Journal of Cardiology.
"If you are by nature a cheerful person and look on the bright side of things, you are more likely to be protected from cardiac events," says study leader Lisa R. Yanek, M.P.H., an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "A happier temperament has an actual effect on disease and you may be healthier as a result."
Yanek cautioned that cheerful personalities are likely part of the temperament we are born with, not something we can easily change. While some have suggested it's possible that people lucky enough to have such a trait are also more likely to take better care of themselves and have more energy to do so, Yanek says her research shows that people with higher levels of well-being still had many risk factors for coronary disease but had fewer serious heart events.
She emphasized that the mechanisms behind the protective effect of positive well-being remain unclear. She also noted that her research offers insights into the interactions between mind and body, and could yield clues to those mechanisms in the future.
For the study, Yanek and her colleagues first looked at data from GeneSTAR (Genetic Study of Atherosclerosis Risk), a 25-year Johns Hopkins project sponsored by the National Institutes of Health to determine the roots of heart disease in people with a family history of coronary disease. They analyzed information gathered from 1,483 healthy siblings of people who had coronary events before the age of 60 and who were followed for five to 25 years. Siblings of people with early-onset coronary artery disease (CAD) are twice as likely of developing it themselves.
Among other things, study participants filled out well-being surveys and received a score, on a scale of 0 to 110, which gauged cheerful mood, level of concern about health, whether they were relaxed as opposed to anxious, energy level and life satisfaction. Over the course of an average 12-year follow-up, the researchers documented 208 coronary events heart attacks, sudden cardiac death, acute coronary syndrome, and the need for stents or bypass surgery in the sibling group.
The researchers found that participants' positive well-being was associated with a one-third reduction in coronary events; among those deemed at the highest risk for a coronary event, there was nearly a 50 percent reduction. The findings took into account other heart disease risk factors such as age, smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure.
To validate their result, the researchers then looked at similar information in a general population using data from 5,992 participants in the first National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). In this population, over an average 16-year follow-up, there were 1,226 coronary events (20.5 percent). They found that this group also benefitted from a cheerful temperament, which reduced their risk of a coronary event by 13 percent.
The findings held whether the participants were white or African-American, men or women.
