Army Showcases Quantum Hybrid at Indy 500

Irvine, Calif.?-?Quantum Fuel Systems Technologies Worldwide, Inc. (Nasdaq: QTWW) announced that the U.S. Army's Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) demonstrated the Clandestine Extended Range Vehicle (CERV) as part of special events ramping to the Indianapolis 500. The U.S. Army labeled the CERV as one of the "greenest technologies" and demonstrated how its advanced hybrid electric powertrain developed by Quantum and TARDEC saves taxpayer dollars and Soldiers' lives.

In support of the U.S. Army's drive for energy efficiency, Quantum developed the Military Aggressor, a first generation fuel cell hybrid electric alternative mobility vehicle (AMV) several years ago. This high performance vehicle was designed for quick-paced mobility operations such as reconnaissance, surveillance and target designation. The CERV is a newer generation stealth vehicle that incorporates Quantum's Q-Force all-wheel drive diesel hybrid-electric technology and a light-weight chassis to produce a torque in excess of 5,000 foot-pounds. The unit has a top speed of 80 mph and climb 60 percent grades, while reducing fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent compared with conventional vehicles of comparable size.

In a recent press release, TARDEC NAC Director Paul Skalny noted, "In keeping with the Nation's interest in fuel efficiency, renewable power and energy security, TARDEC is fully engaged in ambitious programs that push development of hybrid electric vehicles for U.S. military use. Having CERV at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway - the proving ground from which both the defense and automotive industry have learned so much - is a solid indicator of where this technology can go."

Flexibility And Stretching: Is Stretching Before Working Out ...

I don?t know about you but the thought of stretching is like nails on a chalk board. I have harbored a slight hatred towards it since I was a kid. I always felt like I was wasting precious time. Whether it was getting ready to play kickball as a youngster, or psyching myself up for some intense HIIT. I have had numerous people and coaches tell me that stretching before working out was a must. The idea of flexibility and stretching as the proper way to prevent injury, reduce muscle soreness, and increase performance sounds correct and logical on the surface?but is it?

[Stretching before lifting will make you weaker for that particular exercise]

I?m Want To Pull My Hair Out!? But Only After 20 Minutes Of Touching My Toes

The importance of stretching was drilled in my head as a kid all the way up to college baseball. I remember times when pre practice stretching would last upwards of twenty minutes or more. I seriously couldn?t stand it. Not only did I feel like we were wasting our time, but I never felt as explosive and strong as I did with just a quick warm up. It seemed like I ran my fastest and threw my hardest when my muscles were ?slightly stiff.? If stretching prior to competition was so important, why did it seem to work against me all the time? Before we take a look at what the experts say, I?ll give you the goods right away for?you internet skimmers.

For Those Who Just Want The Summary

I figured I would simply give you the summary of my findings for those who could care less about the research. I understand people value their time so they simply want to know ?is it good or bad??? So here it is:

Properly warming up the muscles in a dynamic approach is highly beneficial. This is achieved by allowing a full range of motion but done in a lighter manner.
You don?t need to stretch before exercising because it reduces strength and power, thus making you weaker.(static)
If increasing flexibility is of importance to you, 1 stretch per body part for under 30 seconds/day is plenty. There is no need to hold stretches for minutes on end.( University of Central Arkansas:?)

Note: Be smart and realize that there are exceptions for things. Especially requiring a different approach?like?specialy sports(gymnastics) or with the use of injury rehab.

Dynamic And Static Stretching/Flexibility

I will try and make this as short as possible so that it isn?t a ?snooze? to read.

1. Dynamic(Active) Flexibility: You are using a full range of motion to help with flexibility. Think of a movement that slowly stretches the muscles while you are moving. (Ex: High knees, butt kicks, throwing motions, etc)

2. Static(Passive) Flexibility: Holding and extended position with tension for a longer period of time. This can be done with your own weight or assisted weight. (Ex: touching your toes, arm holds, doing the splits)

Does Stretching Before Working Out Prevent Injuries?

For nerds like us who like to see the research side: ?Static (Passive) Stretching?

An Australian army physiotherapist named Rod Pope conducted a study over a year with upwards of 1,600 recruits to determine the relationship between injury prevention and static stretching. He found that those who performed static stretches and those who didn?t, had no difference in preventing injury. ( www.pponline.co.uk, So what about dynamic flexibility. Rod Pope,? ?Skip the warm-up,?? New Scientist, 164(2214),? p. 23)
In the book ?Sports Medicine? by Gleim & McHugh, challenged the idea of stretching and increasing flexibility as a way to prevent injury. (Gleim & McHugh (1997), ?Flexibility and its effects on sports injury and performance,? Sports Medicine, 24(5), pp. 289-299)

What About Explosive Movements And Strength?

There are so many studies that point to muscle strength decreasing in static stretches that it is mind boggling. Strength can reduce close to 30% right after stretching. Although they can?t figure out why explosive movements and strength decrease with static holds, I think it has a lot to do with the muscles losing its ability to contract hard and quickly. Here are some studies:

Research shows that static stretching decreases muscle strength close to 10% for one hour after the stretch. It is also important to note that eccentric strength decreases by 7% when the hamstring is specifically stretched.(Mick Critchell, Warm Ups For Soccer: A Dynamic approach,? page 5)
A very good study for athletes: They found that the muscles used for explosive movements like the hamstrings, quads, and calf muscles, reduced quite a bit with only three 15-second stretches. A decrease in specific coordination also decreased. (Knudson, D., K. Bennet, R. Corn, D. Leick, and C. Smith. 2000. Acute Effects of Stretching Are Not Evident in the Kinematics of the Vertical Jump. Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport vol. 71, no. 1 (Supplement), p. A-30.?? Tomas Kurz, www.scienceofsports.com)
Wayne State College: Study shows a 5% decrease in bicep strength after static stretches.
McMaster University: Study shows a?30% decrease in calf strength after the?muscle was stretched.?This study also?displayed a decrease in strength in the calf muscle almost an hour after the initial stretch.?

What About Reducing Muscle Soreness?

A study that researched several types of stretching was done at the University of Sydney by Rob D Herbert. He concluded that stretching does not seem to present a reduction or prevention of muscle soreness. Although he admits that that generality of his findings on injury prevention still needs further research, he says a lot of evidence is against it.?

Flexibility And Stretching: Dynamic And Static Don?t Equate

Whether you are warming up to lift weights or for sprinting, dynamic and static stretching can create a deficit in flexibility. What I mean is this: Stretching a muscle to ?improve? flexibility in a static manner, will not improve flexibility in the same way as if you were to do it in a dynamic fashion. This is why a lot of stretches out there can create this imbalance (deficit), thus increasing the likelihood of injury.

A Full R.O.M Increases Flexibility And Performance

If you want to increase your dynamic flexibility, then optimizing a full range of motion is key. This is the kind of mindset that you want in regards to flexibility and stretching. Optimizing a full range of motion will increase that range of motion in whatever exercise that you are performing. The only problem is that it can be tough to do when your muscles aren?t warmed up. We have a solution for that!?

Warming Up The Right Way: From A Lifting Perspective

We have learned that stretching before working out reduces strength and performance, so that is the last thing that we want when lifting weights. So to properly warm up you will want to lift lighter weights using a full range of motion. While lifting you are going to ?pretend? that the weight is really heavy. Grab the weight as hard as you can and flex the surrounding muscles really hard while lifting. Stick to a slow and controlled movement like you would with heavy weights. Not only will this warm up the muscles, but it is a great way for you to learn how to increase strength and muscle tone. ?The Hangover Part II? Biggest Comedy Bow of All Time at $138.1 Million

Shattering numerous records, Warner Bros.? The Hangover Part II grossed $118.1 million in its first four days to help fuel the best Memorial Day weekend in history at the domestic box office. The sequel is expected to gross another $20 million on Monday for a staggering five-day bow of $138.1 million, setting a new benchmark for comedies.

Overseas, Hangover opened to $59 million from 40 countries--thee times higher than the first Hangover and bringing the sequel's global bow to almost $200 million. Hangover grossed $16.4 million in the U.K., the best ever launch for a U.S. comedy, as well as the top opening of 2011.

DreamWorks Animation and Paramount?s Kung Fu Panda 2 also contributed to the boom, grossing $54.6? million in its first four days (like Hangover, Panda opened on Thursday). The 3D toon should end Monday with a five-day total of $68.2 million.

Kung Fu Panda impressed overseas, where it grossed a mighty $57 million from 8,023 markets in only 11 territories. In seven territories, it scored the best opening ever for an animated title and in China, scored the biggest opening of all time for a foreign film in grossing $18.5 million.?

Hangover?s foreign numbers weren?t immediately available.

In the U.S., the specialty business also soared, thanks to Woody Allen?s holdover Midnight in Paris and new entry The Tree of Life, from Terrence Malick.

Tree of Life, grossing $352,320 for the weekend proper as it opened in four theaters in New York and Los Angeles, posted a per location average of $88,080?an all-time high for a Fox Searchlight title.?

Midnight?which debuted last weekend to a per location average of $99,834?grossed $1.9 million as it expanded into a total of 58 theaters for a 10-day cume of $2.8 million, according to Rentrak.

The overall uptick in theater traffic at the domestic box office was a welcome respite for the film business, which has suffered one of the worst box slumps in history. Grosses for Memorial Day weekend are ?projected to reach $270 million, easily surpassing the $254 million earned in 2007.

From Todd Phillips, Hangover grabbed the best opening ever for a comedy, besting the $85.7 million earned by Bruce Almighty?over Memorial Day weekend in 2003, as well as the biggest Saturday ever for a comedy ($29.7 million). Hangover's Friday-Sunday tally was $86.4 million.

Hangover and Universal?s Bridesmaids set new benchmarks for the playing power of R-rated comedies. Even with competition from?Hangover, Bridesmaids held well over the weekend, declining only 27% to an estimated $16.4 million to place No. 4. On Monday,?Bridesmaids is expected to earn another $4.4 million for a domestic cume of $89.4 million.

Hangover should grab the largest five-day opening ever for any R-rated pic, comedy or otherwise. Previous best was The Matrix Reloaded ($134.3 million) and The Passion of the Christ ($125.2 million).

Hangover is a sizeable victory for Warners and co-financing partner Legendary Pictures, and delivered the studio its best Memorial Weekend ever (Terminator Salvation was the previous crown holder at $65.3 million).?

?This blows everything out of the water. It?s pretty amazing stuff,? Warner Bros. president of domestic distribution Dan Fellman said. ?Moviegoers love all the characters, and they love the story.?

Hangover is the first title in months to appeal heavily to younger moviegoers, who represented 54% of the audience.?

Moviegoers delivered rave reviews for both Hangover and Kung Fu Panda, which drew an A- CinemaScore and A CinemaScore, respectively.

Families turned out in force for Kung Fu Panda, which return Jack Black, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Dustin Hoffman, Seth Rogen and Lucy Liu return to lead the voice cast. About 45% of the total gross came 3D screens, although if the toon had played in Imax theaters, 3D grosses would have likely repped 55% of the total, according to DreamWorks.

Kung Fu Panda's Friday-Sunday gross was an estimated $48 million.

?We?re thrilled to have Kung Fu Panda be part of this record-breaking weekend. We came in at high end of expecations. We played very strong to families and kids, who made up 60% of our audience,? DreamWorks Animation president of marketing Anne Globe said.

The original Kung Fu Panda debuted to $60.2 million in early June 2008 at the domestic box office on its way to cuming $215.4 million.?

Coming in third at the domestic box office was Disney?s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which grossed a solid $39.3 million for the three-day weekend and is projected to earn $50 million through Monday. For the weekend proper, the pic fell roughly 55% from last weekend, in line with drops for the previous titles in the franchise. On Stranger Tides should end Monday with a domestic cume of $163.7 million.

Disney president of worldwide distribution Chuck Viane said he was happy that Pirates helped contribute to the record Memorial Day weekend.

Overseas, Pirates continued to thrive, grossing an estimated $122.9 million for the three-day weekend. By Monday, the tentpole?s global cume will be $646.5 million, by far the best showing of the year.

Whole Foods Market Tustin expanding wine bar business - Fast Food ...

If you?ve been to Whole Foods Market in Tustin, you know it stretches the meaning of the word ?supermarket.?

The gargantuan store could easily swallow several Albertsons without indigestion.

And the inventory is mind-boggling. Want some pickled kumquats to go with your Russian caviar and Vosges chocolate? No problem!

Not surprisingly, the store is moving into fresh realms for selling wine and beer as well.

A new marketing supervisor, Michael Hack, arrived early this year from Detroit. A wine, beer and spirits expert, Gina Cook, came at around the same time; she held the same job most recently at Whole Foods Buckhead location in Atlanta.

Their mission is to make the Tustin store a destination for the discriminating wine buyer. The in-store bar has 24 enomatic machines, which dole out small samples of wine. There are also three to six microbrews on tap.

?Gina and I are working together to create some events for wine lovers,? Hack said. ?She?s got a vast wealth of knowledge.?

Cook has been a wine buyer for Whole Foods for more than three years, and she?s been in the wine and spirits business since 1998.

?I kind of fell into it by accident,? said Cook, who used to work in advertising. When she decided she was serious about her new field, Cook rented her home and moved to London in 2001 to study at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust. She recently passed the challenging Certified Specialist of Wine exam.

At Whole Foods, ?I specialize in focusing on what people tell me they?re looking for,? Cook said. ?Sometimes they don?t even know how to verbalize that. It?s kind of like getting a pearl out of an oyster.?

After several months on the job, Cook said one of her main goals is to ?get people out of their comfort zone to try something I suspect they?ll really like. Cabernet, Chardonnay, Pinot and Merlot is what a lot of people know. At the wine bar I often feature less common varietals that I think people might really like.?

Her other big goal?

?To take the pretentiousness out of it. That?s a problem in our business. I want people to feel comfortable about wine.?

The store?s wine bar hosts regular tastings and is available for special groups of up to 20. Cook started an e-mail newsletter about two months ago to keep regulars up to date on events and bargains. ?Sometimes I?ll throw in a secret password that will get them something special that isn?t on the normal menu.?

Cook likes to feature a wide range of wines on the enomatic machines, all of it available for purchase. ?You can taste everything from a Chateau Ste. Michelle Riesling to a Silver Oak Cab.?

Hack emphasized that Whole Foods is trying to shed its ?Whole Paycheck? reputation, and that applies to wine, too.
?We?re focusing on value. We try to stock 90-point wines for under $20. And all our Top 10 wines (a company-wide list published twice yearly) are under $15.?

Whole Foods? wine bar opens at noon every day and closes at around 8:30 p.m. (an hour earlier on Sunday).

The best thing about Whole Foods? wine bar, Cook said, is that patrons can take advantage of everything the store has to offer while they?re there. ?You can have a steak grilled or a lobster steamed and they?ll bring it to you. And you can watch the game on our flat screen TV.?

Lobster? Silver Oak? Couch potato-ing? This isn?t your grandpa?s supermarket.

Intel Shrugs at Tablets' Potential to Mess Up PC, Notebook Sales

Intel IntelIntel would happily make custom chips for Apple and other rivals, its CFO said Thursday, but hinted that the company doesn't believe the Apple iPad and similar tablets will make much of a dent in laptop sales and thus Intel's core processor business.

Instead, tablets are an "incremental device" with limited applications that appeal to upscale consumers, not the mass market or businesses, Stacy Smith said.

The chipmaker sees sales of notebook computers leaping ahead and with them, orders for full-powered processors.

According to Reuters, Smith said Intel would gladly use its manufacturing might to combine its proprietary architecture with other companies' technology, and might even consider making non-Intel cores for some customers.

"If Apple or Sony came to us and said 'I want to do a product that involves your IA (Intel architecture) core and put some of my IP around it', I wouldn't blink. That would be fantastic business for us," he said.

"Then you get into the middle ground of 'I don't want it to be a IA core, I want it to be my own custom-designed core,' and ... that would be a much more in-depth discussion and analysis," Smith said.

He spoke to reporters at an investor conference in London along with Christian Morales, head of Intel's operations in Europe, Middle East and Africa.

"The data is the data," Morales said. "The [highest sales] volumes are notebooks, then netbooks, then other devices."

Netbooks surged ahead in 2008-2010 because the economy was bad and they were cheap, Smith said. Now that the economy is starting to recover, netbook sales have tanked because consumers and businesses want real computers.

Even Apple is selling MacBooks at a faster clip than iPads, Smith said. The iPad runs on a Samsung processor, while Apple uses Intel Core2 processors for MacBooks.

In the worst-case scenario, tablets move ahead of netbooks late this year and might steal a third of the netbook business by 2013, he predicted.
