And when such concerns are addressed, what is expected of a genuine opposition is to acknowledge this, hence rally behind the status quo. President Jammeh made no mistake in describing the Gambian opposition as not genuine and engaging in politics of tribalism.

They are only hellbent on condemning the government and never acknowledge achievements wherever they are registered. Of course, we know that some people who were in the opposition have seen the light and switched allegiance to the ruling party. The fact that many people on a daily basis switch allegiance to the APRC is proof that the party has not departed from its mission statement, which is reconstruction and re-orientation.

Whatever the case may be, President Jammeh is dedicated to the development of this country and no measure of distraction would make him capitulate before the forces of retrogression.

We should join hands to build the nation, irrespective of our political differences. Regardless of our political affiliations, it is The Gambia that we look up to anywhere we are in this world; this is why the president often calls on the citizenry to rally round a common front for progress and development.

Every sober-minded person is aware that under President Jammeh and the APRC, there has been a proliferation of development in all sectors in the country. There has been no marginalisation in terms of people accessing and benefiting from the development projects.

It is therefore in the best interest of patriotism and nationalism for each and every Gambian to cement loyalty to the state and continue to rally behind the leadership that is struggling to emancipate this country from the relics of colonialism.

The fact that President Jammeh continues to call on Gambians to rally behind a common front for development is enough justification to argue that he is that type of leader who has at the core of his governance agenda the need for the fulfilment of the needs and aspirations of the people.

Much more, genuine politics calls for the mobilisation of the citizenry to complement the efforts of the leadership in the development of the state. Let us shun tribal politics.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2011) ? In the 15th century, when Europeans first began moving people and goods across the Atlantic, a microscopic stowaway somehow made its way to the caves and monasteries of Bavaria.

The stowaway, a yeast that may have been transported from a distant shore on a piece of wood or in the stomach of a fruit fly, was destined for great things. In the dank caves and monastery cellars where 15th century brewmeisters stored their product, the newly arrived yeast fused with a distant relative, the domesticated yeast used for millennia to make leavened bread and ferment wine and ale. The resulting hybrid -- representing a marriage of species as evolutionarily separated as humans and chickens -- would give us lager, the clear, cold-fermented beer first brewed by 15th century Bavarians and that today is among the most popular -- if not the most popular -- alcoholic beverage in the world.

And while scientists and brewers have long known that the yeast that gives beer the capacity to ferment at cold temperatures was a hybrid, only one player was known: Saccharomyces cerevisiae, the yeast used to make leavened bread and ferment wine and ale. Its partner, which conferred on beer the ability to ferment in the cold, remained a puzzle, as scientists were unable to find it among the 1,000 or so species of yeast known to science.

Now, an international team of researchers believes it has identified the wild yeast that, in the age of sail, apparently traveled more than 7,000 miles to those Bavarian caves to make a fortuitous microbial match that today underpins the $250 billion a year lager beer industry.

Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers from Portugal, Argentina and the United States describe the discovery of a wild yeast in the beech forests of Patagonia, the alpine region at the tip of South America, that apparently solves the age-old mystery of the origin of the yeast that made cold-temperature fermentation and lager beer possible.

"People have been hunting for this thing for decades," explains Chris Todd Hittinger, a University of Wisconsin-Madison genetics professor and a co-author of the new study. "And now we've found it. It is clearly the missing species. The only thing we can't say is if it also exists elsewhere (in the wild) and hasn't been found."

The newfound yeast, dubbed Saccharomyces eubayanus, was discovered as part of an exhaustive global search, led by the New University of Lisbon's Jos? Paulo Sampaio and Paula Gon?alves. Aimed squarely at resolving the lager yeast mystery, the Portuguese team sorted through European yeast collections, combed the scientific literature and gathered new yeasts from European environments. Their efforts yielded no candidate species of European origin.

Expanding the search to other parts of the world, however, finally paid dividends when collaborator Diego Libkind of the Institute for Biodiversity and Environment Research (CONICET) in Bariloche, Argentina, found in galls that infect beech trees a candidate species whose genetic material seemed to be a close match to the missing half of the lager yeast.

"Beech galls are very rich in simple sugars. It's a sugar rich habitat that yeast seem to love," notes Hittinger.

The yeast is so active in the galls, according to Libkind, that they spontaneously ferment. "When overmature, they fall all together to the (forest) floor where they often form a thick carpet that has an intense ethanol odor, most probably due to the hard work of our new Saccharomyces eubayanus."

The new yeast was hustled off to the University of Colorado School of Medicine, where a team that included Hittinger, Jim Dover and Mark Johnston sequenced its genome. "It proved to be distinct from every known wild species of yeast, but was 99.5 percent identical to the non-ale yeast portion of the lager genome," says Hittinger, now an assistant professor of genetics at UW-Madison.

The Colorado team also identified genetic mutations in the lager yeast hybrid distinctive from the genome of the wild lager yeast. Those changes -- taking place in a brewing environment where evolution can be amped up by the abundance of yeast -- accumulated since those first immigrant yeasts melded with their ale cousins 500 years ago and have refined the lager yeast's ability to metabolize sugar and malt and to produce sulfites, transforming an organism that evolved on beech trees into a lean, mean beer-making machine.

"Our discovery suggests that hybridization instantaneously formed an imperfect 'proto-lager' yeast that was more cold-tolerant than ale yeast and ideal for the cool Bavarian lagering process," Hittinger avers. "After adding some new variation for brewers to exploit, its sugar metabolism probably became more like ale yeast and better at producing beer."

TUNIS/ZAWIYAH, Libya (Reuters) ? Rebels battled for towns on either side of the besieged Libyan capital Tripoli on Saturday, and fighting spilled across the border into Tunisia, where Libyan infiltrators clashed with Tunisian troops.

Tunisian security sources said their forces had intercepted Libyan men in vehicles with weapons and fought them through the night in the desert. They reported several casualties.

The six-month-old war in Libya came close to the frontier this week after rebels suddenly seized the coastal city of Zawiyah just 50 km (30 miles) west of Tripoli, surrounding the capital and severing its supply routes.

Gaddafi's forces west of Zawiyah and near the Tunisian border have been effectively encircled and cut off from their own supply lines. Tunisia has beefed up its army presence in the border area.

Residents of the southern Tunisian desert town of Douz told Reuters by telephone that helicopters were swooping overhead and troops had been summoned from nearby towns to subdue the infiltrators, who rode in vehicles without number plates.

The Tunisian security sources did not say whether the armed men were rebels or supporters of Gaddafi. Residents said they believed they were Gaddafi supporters.

Tunisian officials also said a Tunisian army helicopter had crashed because of mechanical problems in the border area, killing the pilot and co-pilot.

URGENCY

The siege of Tripoli and the prospect of a battle for the capital have added urgency to the question of Gaddafi's fate. The leader has repeatedly vowed never to leave the country. Rebels say they will not stop fighting until he is gone.

Representatives of the two sides held talks early this week in a Tunisian resort, attended by a former French prime minister, but announced no breakthrough. The severing of the road link between Tripoli and Tunisia makes further talks difficult.

A Tunisian official source said Libya's top oil official, Omran Abukraa, had arrived in Tunisia after deciding not to return to Tripoli from a trip to Italy.

If confirmed it would be the third apparent defection of a senior Gaddafi associate this week. A senior security official arrived in Rome Monday and rebels said Friday that Gaddafi's estranged former deputy Abdel Salam Jalloud had joined their side.

Mortar and rocket rounds crashed into the center of Zawiyah Saturday. Shells struck the central hospital around dawn, blasting holes in the walls.

In the central square, residents were burning and stamping on a green Gaddafi flag. "Gaddafi is finished. Civilians are starting to come back to the cities. Libya is finally free," said one, who gave his name as Abu Khaled.

In a nearby alley, residents had gathered to stare at the bodies of two Gaddafi soldiers lying in the street. Gunfire and explosions could be heard in the distance.

Rebels said the main Gaddafi force had retreated about 10 km (six miles) east to the town of Jaddayim and was shelling Zawiyah from there.

East of the capital, where fighting has been bloodier and rebel advances far slower, opposition forces fought street battles in the city of Zlitan but suffered heavy casualties, a Reuters reporter said Friday. A rebel spokesman said 32 rebel fighters were killed and 150 wounded.

Gaddafi's spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said late Friday the government's military held the upper hand in both Zawiyah and Zlitan.

The sudden imposition of a siege around Tripoli has trapped its residents behind the front line and cut it off from fuel and food. The International Organization for Migration said on Friday it would organize a rescue operation to evacuate thousands of foreign workers, probably by sea.

Republicans in Wisconsin?s Senate will retain their razor-edge margin over Democrats in the wake of a special recall election Tuesday.

Voters allowed two Democratic incumbent senators to retain their seats, meaning Republicans have just a one-vote majority in the Senate, 17 to 16. That's a narrower margin than before this month's spate of recall elections. Expectations are that it will push Gov. Scott Walker (R) toward a legislative agenda that holds greater appeal for Democrats or that is handled more sensitively than the so-called ???budget repair bill??

The reshuffling is expected to make it more difficult for the Republican majority to pass controversial legislation such as stricter restrictions on abortion rights or harsher penalties for illegal immigrants.

An earlier recall election, held Aug. 9, dashed Democrats' hopes of seizing control of the Senate, but it did roll over two Republican seats in their favor. Both Democratic senators up for recall Tuesday managed double-digit victories. With 95 percent of precincts reporting in District 12 by midnight, Sen. Jim Holperin (D) defeated Kim Simac, a tea party organizer, 55 to 45 percent. In the District 22 race, Sen. Bob Wirch (D) defeated Jonathan Steitz, a corporate attorney, 58 percent to 42 percent, with all precincts reporting.

Senator Wirch?s district represents Kenosha and much of the area in southeast Wisconsin close to the Illinois border. Senator Holperin?s district lies in the northernmost area of the state alongside Green Bay.

Two weeks of recall elections gave both parties an opportunity to declare victory.

In holding their majority, Republicans claimed that voters were less than thrilled to recast votes for state senators they fully supported all along. They also said voters rejected the idea that kicking out their Republican senators served as a de facto referendum on Walker?s legislation, which Democrats portrayed as hostile to public-sector unions and the middle class.

For their part, Democrats claimed they succeeded in creating a Senate that will be less of a rubber stamp for Walker's policies. They also said the closer margin will help to give Democrats their voices back just in time for the 2012 national election cycle.

Telling the Associated Press that Tuesday?s recall election ?fundamentally changed the face of power in the Wisconsin legislature,? Wisconsin Democratic Party Chairman Mike Tate suggested that, ?at the end of this historic recall effort, Democrats have the momentum.?

Republicans are casting the recall process as ?political games? by embittered Democrats, according to Republican Senate majority leader Scott Fitzgerald. ?Democrats need to start working with the other side of the aisle, not just moving on to their next recall target,? Senator Fitzgerald said in a statement released Tuesday.

That next recall target is decided: Walker. Mr. Tate and other Democratic leaders have already said they plan to begin efforts this summer to remove Walker from office when he becomes eligible for recall in 2012.

However, the public?s appetite is small for another recall election of a state official, even though Walker has lost some support.

Public Policy Polling, a Raleigh, N.C., polling firm that often works for Democrats, reported Monday that 50 percent of Wisconsin voters oppose recalling Walker, with 47 percent in favor. The findings reverse those in May, when 47 percent of voters opposed a Walker recall and 50 percent were in support.

Because Walker?s approval ratings have been sliding, the growing opposition to his recall probably has more to do with voter fatigue about the process itself.

Some 53 percent of voters disapprove of Walker?s performance. If a recall election were to take place between the current governor and former US Sen. Russ Feingold (D), Mr. Feingold would be the preferred choice for 52 percent of voters, compared with 45 percent who would vote to keep Walker in office.

In a statement, Public Policy Polling Dean Debnam said ?a Scott Walker recall is still in the realm of possibility,? but added that ?Democrats really might need Russ Feingold to run if they want to knock? Walker off the ballot.

Walker may survive a recall if he tailors more bipartisan issues, like job creation, to independent voters. ?It will be nearly impossible [for Walker] to win Democratic voters back, but independent voters currently leaning against him probably could be convinced to come back to his side if the next six months are less divisive than the last seven months,? says Charles Franklin, a political scientist at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.

The Republican whom Democrats are expected to cajole and not criticize is state Sen. Dale Schultz, considered the single moderate in his party. Senator Schultz was the only Senate Republican to vote against Walker?s ?budget repair bill,? and many Democrats have suggested that his vote is so valuable that he is first in line for any back-room negotiations that may take place once the Senate reconvenes this fall.

Time will tell whether Schultz ultimately serves as a lynchpin for more bipartisanship in the Senate, says Mr. Franklin. He will be sought after by Republicans, too, for potentially persuading moderate Democrats to vote for bills pushed forward by his own party.

?He?s certainly getting a lot of love and attention from a lot of people. Whether or not he?ll fulfill the role Democrats want him to fulfill? is less certain, Franklin says.

In Wisconsin, voters are about evenly divided among Democrats, Republicans, and independents. ?All evidence says [Wisconsin] is still a purple state,? says Franklin, which means it is likely to be among the swing states that decide the national election in 2012. ?The underlying complexity of the electorate remains fairly closely divided,? he says. With so much hanging on Wisconsin next year, ?a cliffhanger is the most likely outcome.?

The handwritten address isn't from a friend, boss, family member, or anyone you seem to know. It isn't a bill either. You decide to open it and read, to find out what it is and who it's from. SHENZHEN, China - After snagging Canada's first medal Monday thanks to a third-place finish in the individual all-around competition, Nathan Gafuik struck again Tuesday with a silver medal at the vault on the final day of artistic gymnastics action at the 26th Summer Universiade.

Gafuik, an Athabasca University student, became the first Canadian gymnast to capture two individual medals at the same world university games.

?It feels pretty good. It's not exactly the medal I wanted, but it'll do,? said Gafuik.

The Calgary native took part in four of the six finals held Tuesday night.

At the vault, one of the two apparatuses he dominated on Monday during the all-around competition - along with the horizontal bar - Gafuik went last and earned 16.112 points to finish just behind Flavius Koczi of Romania (16.237).

?Things could have gone a little better, there were a few minor things today that didn't go as well as I had hoped. There isn't much of an advantage going last, I got to see everything that happened beforehand, but after that, you still have to go out and perform regardless of what happened before you.?

?I keep all my medals in shoeboxes, labelled for each year that I have competed, so these ones are going into the archive,? said Gafuik, the only Canadian in action in Tuesday's finals.

The Canadian women are still in contention at the first-ever Universiade beach volleyball tournament, while the last Canadian men's team was ousted from the competition on Tuesday.

In the men's tourney, the Canada 1 squad of Cameron Wheelan of Barrie, Ont., and Simon Fecteau-Boutin of Levis, Que., suffered its second defeat of the double-elimination second round, losing to the Czech Republic 21-19, 21-15.

On the women's side, both Canadian pairs are still in the thick of things.

Caleigh Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., and Kristina Valjas of Toronto, who make up Canada 1, rallied from a set down to beat USA 1 by 17-21, 21-10, 15-7 in the morning match, improving their overall record to 4-0 in the process. In the afternoon however, the teammates lost for the first time this week, a 22-24, 21-19, 16-14 decision to Italy.

The Pool C first-place finishers resume second-round play on Wednesday.

The Canada 2 squad of Kristina Vlcek of Toronto and Becky Billings of Ottawa also lost its first match of the elimination round on Tuesday, a 23-21, 21-10 defeat to Slovakia 2 in its lone outing of the day.

In swimming, Tera van Beilen barely missed the podium in the women's 200-metre breaststroke. Seventh at the 150m turn, the native of Oakville, Ont., mounted a comeback to finish in a personal best 2:26.78, only 11 hundredths of a second behind bronze medallist Satomi Suzuki of Japan.

Hanna Pierse of Edmonton was eighth in the 400 individual medley, a result matched in the final race of the evening by the men's 4x200 freestyle relay of Dominique Massie-Martel of Ottawa, Nicholas Sinclair of Victoria, Kier Maitland of Edmonton and Colin Miazga of Saskatoon.

Jenna Martin of Bridgewater, N.S., and Amonn Nelson of Calgary both qualified for the women's 400m semifinals, while Ottawa's Michael Robertson will compete in the men's 400m semifinals and Toronto native Mark Dillon is off to the final in high jump.

In the men's 100m, Dontae Richards-Kwok of Mississauga, Ont., is through to the semifinals. West Vancouver's Helen Crofts and Annie LeBlanc of Repentigny, Que., both qualified for the 800m semifinals.

In men's volleyball, Canada (3-0) all but secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-14) win over Norway (1-2).

In women's water polo, Canada (0-2-1) was downed 15-12 by the host team from China. The Canadians, who finished third in Pool A, will face Russia Thursday in the quarter-finals.

In women's volleyball, the Canadians (1-2) earned their first win of the tournament, downing winless France 3-1 (27-25, 13-25, 25-19, 25-18) to close out Group C play. Canada will not advance to the quarter-finals.

In men's soccer, the Canadians picked up their first point of the tournament, drawing Ghana 1-1 in their final Group D match. Carl Haworth of Barrie, Ont., scored on a penalty kick for the Canucks, who finish the round robin with a mark of 0-2-1 and will miss the quarter-finals.

In women's table tennis, Montreal's Sara Yuen won both her matches on Tuesday - first downing Hoiyan Lok of Hong Kong 3-2 (12-10, 7-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4) and then rallying to beat USA's Barbara Wei 13-11, 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-7. She advances to the next round.

In men's competition, Peng Guo of Montreal was swept 11-8, 11-4, 11-7 by Kentaro Miuchi of Japan to fall to 1-1 in his group, while Pierre-Luc Hinse of Gatineau, Que., defeated Romualdo Manna of Italy 3-1 (11-8, 12-10, 8-11, 11-7). Hinse has one more preliminary match remaining on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? U.S. drug regulators on Wednesday approved a new drug from Roche Holding for treating late-stage skin cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the drug, under the brand name Zelboraf, along with a companion diagnostic that identifies which patients have a specific genetic mutation that means they will benefit from the treatment.

About half of all melanomas, the deadliest form of skin cancer, have the genetic aberration that the drug targets.

Roche filed for U.S. approval of the drug in April and the FDA had to make a decision by October 28.

Analysts have forecast annual Zelboraf sales for Roche of $732 million by 2015.

In March, the FDA approved the first treatment to help patients with advanced melanoma live longer. The drug Yervoy, or ipilimumab, is sold by Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Deere & Co.'s third-quarter net income jumped 15 percent and it boosted its outlook for the year Wednesday with global demand for its green and yellow equipment still strong.

Deere benefited from favorable exchange rates and price increases, but most of the improvement was driven by strong sales growth. Equipment sales grew 49 percent outside of the U.S. and Canada. Sales rose 10 percent within the United States and Canada.

Deere generated $712.3 million, or $1.69 per share, in the quarter that ended July 31. That's up from $617 million, or $1.44 per share, in the same period last year.

Strong equipment sales helped the Moline, Ill., company's revenue grow 22 percent to $8.4 billion in the quarter, up from last year's $6.84 billion.

Deere said its costs increased 23 percent to $7.29 billion in the quarter from last year's $5.92 billion.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected earnings per share of $1.67 on $7.52 billion revenue on average.

Even with the beat, shares sank nearly 2 percent in early trading with some investors expecting better when the gravity of the Japanese tsunami effect are removed.

Credit Suisse analyst Jamie Cook said the Japanese tsunami proved to be a much smaller drag on earnings than expected. Earlier this year, Deere had predicted the Japanese disaster would hurt sales by $300 million, but Wednesday the company said the actual impact was about $70 million.

However, Cook said that the reduced impact from the tsunami bumped up Deere's third-quarter earnings by about 9 cents per share. Without that and without that, Deere would have fallen short of Wall Street expectations.

Deere says its 2011 equipment sales should grow 25 percent over 2010 to $29.47 billion. That's up from a previous forecast for 20 percent growth. Analysts were expecting 2011 sales of $29.05 billion, according to a poll by FactSet.

The company also lifted its expectations on net income slightly, from $2.65 billion, to $2.7 billion.

Deere's Chairman and CEO Samuel Allen said the company is benefiting from global trends in food and demand for shelter and infrastructure.

"We remain confident that these positive macroeconomic trends have staying power and should prove rewarding to the company and its stakeholders in the years ahead," Allen said.

But Allen also noted that the recent turmoil in financial markets and concerns about the health of the global economy have added some uncertainty to Deere's short-term outlook.

Deere's results offer an indication of how well farmers worldwide are doing. In addition to agricultural equipment, Deere makes construction and forestry equipment, such as backhoes, excavators, riding mowers and leaf blowers. But construction and forestry sales represent a small portion of Deere's business compared to its agricultural equipment.

Deere's shares declined $1.43 to $73.73 in early trading Wednesday.
