The concept of disaster recovery became famous in the mid to late 1970s as a consequence of the realization of time spent and resources lost when the mainframe systems holding large amounts of data were down for a number of days together. Disaster recovery plans help in maintaining the continuity of the technological infrastructure crucial to the operation of the business or enterprise. Disaster recovery thus developed as a subset of business continuity. Business continuity relates to all aspects of the business, whereas disaster recovery mainly relates to the IT or technology systems of the business. These days IT systems have become very critical to the smooth operation most businesses. Therefore continuous operation of systems is of utmost importance. For this disaster recovery plans have to be in place. It is estimated that large corporations set aside 2 4% of their IT budget on disaster recovery planning. Disasters can themselves be natural, such as floods, earthquakes, etc. The second category of disasters is man-made. Terrorism, infrastructure failure, hazardous material spills, etc. It is very difficult to avoid natural disasters, but sufficient planning may be able to mitigate the bad effects and reduce the extent of losses. In the case of man-made disasters, surveillance and mitigation planning will serve to reduce the losses.
