Head of Kazakh oil and gas monopoly fired in riots' aftermath

Kazakhstan will replace the head of state-run oil and gas monopoly KazMunayGaz and its U.K.-listed exploration and production unit after riots in the oil-producing Mangistau region where the latter operates fields, RosBusinessConsulting reported Thursday.

RBC, citing President Nursultan Nazarbayev?s press office, also reported that Baurzhan Mukhamedzhanov was appointed as the new governor of Mangistau, replacing Krymbek Kusherbayev.

Interfax-Kazakhstan cited a government source as saying that Kazakhstan?s deputy oil and gas minister, Lyazzat Kynov, will Bolat Akchulakov as chief of KazMunayGaz. Akchulakov had only been in the post since October. The news service also reported that Alik Aidarbayev, managing director at KazMunayGaz, and chairman of London-listed KazMunayGaz Exploration Production, will replace Askar Balzhanov as the unit?s CEO.

Mangistau, on the Caspian Sea, is home to the town of Zhanaozen, where recent strikes by oil workers demanding higher pay escalated into deadly clashes with riot police.

At least 16 people died in and around Zhanaozen on Dec. 16, according to official reports.
