Households would be guaranteed to receive the best deal their energy supplier offers after choosing from only a dozen tariffs under proposals set to re-shape the gas and electricity market.
David Cameron and Nick Clegg are poised to agree a mechanism that would simplify the number of tariffs on offer and cut bills by an average ?34 a year for the majority of customers. But experts warned it would leave the minority of households that switched regularly and benefited from the cheapest deals about ?100 a year worse off.
The changes would form the centrepiece of the forthcoming energy Bill
