high low adapter
A friend ask me a question today and I had no clue how to answer it. He would like to connect a amplifier toa older RCA reciver with no preout connection, can he use a high low adapter to connect to the speaker terminals so that he can utilize the amplifier?

Technically it is possible, but I'm personally not aware of any commercially available adaptors. I have seen a schematic of something custom built. Basically you have to load the speaker output and then add a voltage divider on top of that to reduce the voltage to line level.

Is the external amp really nice or something? I'd hit up the used market and find a older AVR with pre-outs. That way, he can get sub out with an adjustable crossover and everything. Some of the older stuff that was really expensive, but became dated after HDMI came out and be found pretty cheap now days.
