The coaches didn't find out until they were driving home. It's possible some of the athletes didn't know until they gathered at the top of Mount Agamenticus for a picnic on Tuesday.
But the facts are in. The York Parks and Recreation summer youth track team won the overall and girls' championships at the Maine Junior Olympic Track & Field state meet, held Sunday in Brewer.
"At the meet, we didn't see the team scores except after eight events. We really kind of had no idea that we'd won," co-head coach Danielle Clements said. "It was kind of unbelievable."
Fifty-one athletes from a summer program that served over 90 children in the 5-14 age range qualified for the state meet.
"Really every single kid ended up mattering. We won by less than 17 points so they all contributed," Clements said. "They were always cheering each other on and especially at that age, that extra little clap or cheer makes all the difference in the end."
The York girls scored 185 total points to win the Female Team with Auburn (156.7), Falmouth (156), Panther Track of Waterville (150) and Old Town (129) in the top five among 31 scoring teams.
Scarborough Rec won the Male Team with 151 points, followed by Auburn (132), York (118), Saco Bay Striders (110) and Winslow (101), with 34 teams scoring.
York's combined 317 points edged Auburn (300.7) with Panther Track off the pace in third (246).
"It came down to the final event as it turned out," Clements said of the Midget (ages 11-12) Girls triple jump. "Two of our girls (Delaney Martin and Emma White) came in second and fourth and they knocked out three girls from (scoring for) the Auburn team."
Another highlight of the meet was the overall performance of 10-year-old Nina Howe. She won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes in the Bantam (9-10) division and anchored York's winning 4x100 Bantam relay team.
Charlotte Grimes, 8, demonstrated noteworthy grit. She finished second in the 400-meters and came back in the next event to win the 800 by over three seconds.
"She's competing in two of the toughest events on the track and they were back-to-back events," Clements said. "That's 18 points, too, so that makes the difference."
The top six finishers in each event scored points. There were four age groups: Mite (ages 7-8), Bantam (9-10), Midget (11-12) and Youth (13-14).
In 2011, York was a competitive fifth place overall, with six first-place finishes and 35 top-six finishes for a total of 188 points. This season the York athletes won 11 events and posted 55 top-sixes (30 being in the top three) while increasing its overall point total by 69 percent.
"I think it's just the cumulative hard work that they've put in over the last three years that we've been coaching," Clements said." We're younger coaches that have come off competing in track recently and I think we just asked a little more of the kids."
Chris Jones is the team's other co-head coach, with Brian Farrell and first-year coach Shelly Potter working as assistants this year.
