Suzy Harrington, RN, DNP, MCHES, has been named director of the American Nurses Association?s Center for Health, Safety and Wellness in Silver Spring, Md.

Under the leadership of Harrington, whose previous experience includes promoting health, fitness and wellness at U.S. Air Force bases and developing and managing community-based health education programs, the center plans to strengthen its emphasis on the Healthy Nurse initiative while continuing its longtime advocacy to improve the nurse work environment, according to a news release.

"We want to empower nurses to make healthy choices, not only for their personal health and wellness, but so they?re able to educate patients to make healthier lifestyle choices," Harrington said in the release.

"We know nurses can be strong advocates and role models for their patients with increased knowledge and attention to self-care."

The Healthy Nurse initiative addresses issues such as nutrition and fitness, tobacco and other addictive substance abuse and a range of conditions caused by stress, such as fatigue and bullying behavior in the workplace. Harrington emphasized in the release that the center?s work in the area of nurses? health and wellness will be evidence-based and outcomes-focused.

"We want to have quantifiable outcomes to show we?re making a difference in nurses? work and lives," Harrington said.

Harrington?s expertise in health education and wellness was a key factor in her selection to lead the center, according to the release.

"Suzy is the right person at the right time to improve the work environments and health of nurses," ANA?s CNO Amy Garcia, RN, MSN, CAE, said in the release. "Her knowledge of workplace hazards and health promotion strategies will help ANA change the world for nurses and nursing."
