Posted by: Harvin Gulfill ?: ?Category: Disease & IllnessOur eyes are one of the most precious senses that we enjoy. Through our sight, we appreciate most of the things, and with the eyes, we see more than what words can tell. If we have lived long with our sense of sight, it will be a real downfall to lose such capability due to untraced signs just like what happens when you get glaucoma.
Glaucoma is an eye disorder generally linked to high intraocular pressure (IOP). A fluid that is found between the cornea and the iris should be drained properly with the right rate of its production to maintain the IOP of our eyes. If any alteration, blocking, or any sort of disruption causes effects on the fluids? outflow and inflow, increased IOP will probably cause retinal damages, leading to glaucoma.
There are generally two types of glaucoma established as of now: one is the open angle type while the other is the closed angle type. Open angle glaucoma is a type where symptoms are not easily diagnosed. The damages brought on optic nerves develop slowly and patients will eventually distinguish vision differences only after the damage is already high. This type of glaucoma causes permanent damage and should be treated as soon as possible to halt the progress which usually ends to total blindness. The closed angle is a type that causes sudden eye pains and really progressive vision deterioration but due to apparent discomforts felt by the patient, the disorder can be quickly traced and attended to.
Through external medications, glaucoma could be, if not totally cured, prevented in causing more damage to the eyes. Eye drops are formulated to help decrease IOP which initially starts the dilemma. Eye surgeries have also helped a lot of glaucoma patients to save their visions. Laser surgeries, implants, canaloplasty, and the like helps in the aquaeous humour drainage that reduce total IOP.
All of us are at risk when it comes to glaucoma. If you?re a female, you?re three times more at risk; if you are from an African descent, that means three times more possibility of getting open angle glaucoma; if you are 40 years old and above, that?s 10% possibility of acquiring such ailment.
