Since the mid-1990s, pediatricians have urged moms, dads and caretakers to place sleeping infants on their backs to help reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome, or SIDs.
Cases of unexplained death have since dropped by more than half, but a far less dangerous side effect has also cropped up: A growing number of babies now have "positional plagiocephaly," or flat spots on the sides or backs of their heads.
A new study in Canada, published in the journal Pediatrics on Monday, found that more than 46 percent of 2- to 3-month-old babies may have some form of the condition, although most cases are mild.
Flat areas on the backs or sides of babies' heads are typically caused by pressure on the bones of the skull and can develop in the first few months of infants' lives. In some cases, the change in head shape is so subtle it is difficult to spot, in others it is quite clear.
"The suggestion is that there has been an increase in the development of 'positional plagiocephaly' since the 'Back to Sleep' campaigns," study author Aliyah Mawji, a researcher and registered nurse with Mount Royal University in Alberta, Canada, wrote in an email to The Huffington Post.
She warned that there is no earlier data with which to compare the new numbers. Therefore, the apparent increase in flatness of babies' heads may be due to the fact that people are generally more aware of the condition now than they were before.
The good news, experts say, is that the flat spots are generally harmless. Mawji said there is some indication that children with positional plagiocephaly have mild developmental delays, but that those typically disappear by 18 months.
"There are no functional problems that I know of, except for a distorted head," said Dr. S. Anthony Wolfe, head of plastic surgery and director of craniofacial surgery at Miami Children's Hospital, who did not work on the new study, but has reviewed it.
The condition can be treated with specialized helmets that babies wear, typically after 6 months of age, but Wolfe stressed that parents would typically only consider that option in more severe cases and for cosmetic reasons. "Some commercial makers of helmets insinuate that if you don't treat it, you may have some [jaw] dysfunction," he said. "But it's really for the head shape and the head shape only."
When it started, the primary focus of the "Back to Sleep" campaign -- now known as the "Safe to Sleep campaign" -- was to ensure babies were placed on their backs during naps and at night in order to reduce risk of SIDs. Although it made a significant dent in the number of SIDs cases, in recent years, the decline has stalled. Newer campaigns focus on a broader range of safe sleeping practices, like using a firm mattress and avoiding soft bedding in a baby's crib. Overall, SIDs is rare, affecting just over 2,200 babies per year in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
As for flat spots, Mawji said parents can prevent them by switching the side of the head their baby puts pressure on when sleeping. The American Academy of Pediatrics also encourages parents to make sure their babies get lots of tummy time, in order to strengthen their neck and shoulder muscles, and minimize the amount of time there is pressure on their heads.
The new study looked at the rates of 440 infants at four community health clinics in Canada, but Mawji said the findings could be loosely applied to the U.S., which is more diverse in terms of culture and socioeconomics.
"My best guess is that my results -- 46.6 percent of infants aged 7 to 12 weeks -- would actually be an underestimation in some parts of the U.S," she said.

The State of Florida rested its case Friday against George Zimmerman, on trial for killing unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin last year. The state faces long odds in winning a conviction.

George Zimmerman stands next to one of his defense attorneys, Don West, during his trial in Seminole circuit court, Friday, July 5, 2013, in Sanford, Fla. Zimmerman has been charged with second-degree murder for the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin.

Mark O?Mara, defending Mr. Zimmerman against a second degree murder charge for the shooting of Trayvon Martin, came right out and said that ?Trayvon Martin caused his own death? by punching Mr. Zimmerman, a move which the defense argued gave Zimmerman self-defense immunity under Florida law.
The prosecution says the state?s witnesses have raised enough questions about Zimmerman?s character and credibility ? specifically an apparent lie on national TV about his knowledge of Florida?s landmark self-defense laws ? for the jury to convict.
?There are two people involved [in this case]: one of them is dead, one of them is a liar,? Assistant State Attorney Richard Mantei told Judge Debra Nelson on Day 18 of the trial.
The comments came out of the jury?s earshot and during a motion by the defense to acquit, a fairly standard maneuver that in many ways outlined closing arguments as well as any future appeals case. Judge Nelson denied the motion, leaving the defense to call its first two witnesses.
The case rose to prominence last year after Trayvon Martin?s parents, Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton, hired a high-profile publicity lawyer to protest the decision by the Sanford Police Department to not arrest Zimmerman for killing their son.
Ensuing ?million hoodie marches? in solidarity with Trayvon and the hoodie he wore on the night he was killed raised racial aspects of the case that still chafe at its edges, while others saw the case as a landmark self-defense argument embodying the expansion by 22 states of the right to defend oneself with deadly force in public places ? so-called ?Stand Your Ground? laws.
So far, it?s been a riveting up-and-down trial that has seen a Skype call with an expert witness get pranked by viewers, a tense and sometimes confounding standoff with Martin?s 19-year-old friend Rachel Jeantel, the taking of the stand by the mothers of the two people involved in the deadly Feb. 26, 2012 altercation, and eyewitnesses who couldn?t agree on who was the aggressor that night.
Two of Zimmerman?s college professors were also called, both testifying that Zimmerman, who took criminal justice courses at Seminole County College in hopes of becoming a prosecutor or federal agent, was an A student in a class where Florida?s self-defense laws were often discussed.
The state was also able to introduce some salient hard facts that may shed light on the dynamics of the fight. While some have speculated that Trayvon was 6-2 and towered over Zimmerman, the medical examiner testified that Trayvon was 5-11 and weighed 158 pounds at the time of death. At the time, Zimmerman, who stands 5-7, weighed around 185 pounds.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - A company being spun-off from Israel Corp
Israel Corp, controlled by billionaire Idan Ofer, announced last month it would split off some of its less-profitable assets into a new, listed company in a bid to boost the value of its core businesses and attract a broader range of investors.
Israel Corp did not announce where the listing would take place, but said the process of separating the company into two would be completed within 6-12 months.
The Israeli holding company will keep two of its most lucrative and stable companies - fertilizer and specialty chemicals maker Israel Chemicals (ICL)
The Sunday Times reported that the London listing would include shipping company Zim, chipmaker TowerJazz
Before the reorganization, Israel Corp will work towards resolving Zim's $2.7 billion debt load through a restructuring with banks, shipyards and bondholders.
An Israel Corp spokesman declined to comment on the report.

A video has surfaced on the internet purportedly showing Egyptian troops firing on a crowd of demonstrators marching in support of President Mohamed Morsi, the former Egyptian president who was ousted on Wednesday in a military coup. Early reports claim that four demonstrators were killed and 13 injured after troops opened fire.
Those protesters, marching in the northern Egyptian city of Marsa Matrouh, were showing their support for Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood when they were attacked by Egyptian troops. The military claims that they fired non-lethal weapons like tear gas and rubber bullets and are not responsible for any bloodshed.

The military also claims that the forcible response from the military was necessary after pro-Morsi demonstrators stormed a local governor?s office in Matrouh.
