Kodak HERO 5.1 All-in-One Printer

The Kodak HERO 5.1 is a step up from the Kodak HERO 3:1 ($99.99 direct), the base model in Kodak?s new multifunction printer (MFP) line. For the extra $30 you pay for it, the HERO 5:1 adds several features that the HERO 3:1 lacks, chiefly a port for a USB thumb drive and an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. Otherwise they were nearly identical in speed and output quality; the HERO 5.1 is a worthy choice for an MFP geared mostly to home use.

The HERO 5.1 prints, scans, and copies. It measures 7.2 by 16.6 by 15.7 inches and weighs 13.8 pounds. It?s boxier than the HERO 3.1 but very similar in layout. To the right of the lid that conceals the scanner platen, a tilt-up 2.4-inch color LCD lies behind a 4-way controller and some basic control buttons: On, Cancel, Home, Back, Zoom in/Zoom Out, and Start. Along with its port for a USB thumb drive, the HERO 5.1 has a media-card reader that can read cards in the SD, Memory Stick, and MultiMedia Card families.

The HERO 5.1 has a 100-sheet paper tray, enough capacity that you could use it for light-duty home-office use, though it?s mostly geared towards home use. It includes support for Google Cloud Print and Kodak Email Print, which is essentially an extension to Google Cloud Print. You assign the printer an email address through Kodak Email Print, and then you can print to it from any computer, smartphone, or other device that can send email. You simply create a message, attach the document you want printed, and send it.? Because the printer has its own email address, you don't even need to turn on your computer, although the printer has to be connected to your network and your network connected to the Internet.

The HERO 5.1 can connect to a LAN via WiFi or to a computer via USB cable, though it lacks USB connectivity. I tested it over a USB connection with the drivers installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Print Speed

I timed the Kodak HERO 5.1 on the latest version of our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software, www.qualitylogic.com) at 3.1 effective pages per minute (ppm), which matched the score of the HERO 3:1 and beat out the Editors? Choice Kodak ESP C310 All In One Printer ($99 direct, 4 stars) 2.7 ppm. The Brother MFC-J430W ($100 street, 4 stars) was faster, testing at 4.3 effective ppm.

Output Quality

Overall, the HERO 5:1?s output was similar to the HERO 3:1, with average text output, sub-par graphics, and average photos. The HERO 5.1?s text quality was typical of an inkjet MFP, suitable for schoolwork and general business use but not for desktop publishing, marketing materials, or other output that you seek to impress an important client with.

Graphics quality for the HERO 5.1 was slightly sub-par for an inkjet. Banding (a regular pattern of faint lines of discoloration) was visible in many illustrations, particularly ones with solid backgrounds. Posterization, abrupt shifts in color where they should be gradual, was evident in a couple of graphics. Also, thin colored lines did not print well, barely showing up against a black background.

Photo quality was about average for an inkjet, with most prints being about what you?d expect from drugstore prints. Overall, colors were rich and well saturated. A monochrome image showed an obvious tint (which may not be an issue if you don?t shoot in black-and-white). Detail was lost in the bright areas of several prints.

Other Issues

The HERO 5.1 includes a utility that will create an anaglyphic 3D color image, the kind that needs glasses with one red lens and one blue lens to see the 3D effect. To print a 3D image, you need two photos of the same scene, and you?ll need to move the camera about three inches horizontally between snapping the two pictures. The utility overlays the images and prints them. To let you see the 3D effect, Kodak provides two pairs of glasses with the printer.

Kodak claims very low running costs for the HERO 5.1 of 3.9 cents per monochrome page and 10.7 cents per color page, comparable to other Kodak MFPs and the same as the HERO 3:1.

The Kodak HERO 5.1 builds on the HERO 3.1, adding a port for a USB thumb drive and an automatic duplexer for a little more money. If those features are important to you, the 5.1?s the better choice. Otherwise, their print speeds were identical and output very similar. The Editors? Choice Kodak ESP C310 provides slightly better photo quality, and the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J430w has a more business-oriented feature set.

Justin Bieber, Cee Lo Green To Play 'Christmas In Washington'

Justin Bieber will slip on his Santa hat next month for a command performance for the First Family when he takes the stage for TNT's annual "Christmas in Washington" holiday special.

JB will be joined by Cee Lo Green, Jennifer Hudson, Victoria Justice and the Band Perry on the show, which will be hosted by Conan O'Brien. The special will air on December 16 at 8 p.m. The 30th anniversary program — which will be taped at the National Building Museum in Washington on December 11 — will benefit the Children's National Medical Center. Among the attendees will be President Obama and the First Lady, along with other Washington VIPs, according to a release announcing the show.

While in England to promote the release of his Under the Mistletoe album, Bieber stopped by radio station Kiss FM, where he not only discussed his fans in the White House, but also spilled the beans that he would be performing at the annual show.

"President Obama ... his kids really like me, which is cool," Bieber said. "I'm actually doing 'Christmas in Washington,' and I'm performing for him and the whole Senate and all that."

Bieber previously performed at the event in 2009 — much to the delight of Sasha and Malia Obama — sharing the stage with the likes of Usher, Mary J. Blige and Sugarland. He also took the stage at the White House's annual Easter Egg Roll in 2010, and he's created a kind of bond with the commander-in-chief.

"[Obama] was really nice, and I was just happy to be [at the White House]," Bieber said last year. "We met [Sasha and Malia], took pictures with them, took pictures with the First Lady.

"The first time I met him was a couple months back," he continued. "I got to hang out with him in the Oval Office, which is pretty crazy, because no one really gets to go in there. It was pretty incredible. I got pictures with him."

Google launches music service (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Google Inc unveiled a new online music store on Wednesday, in a move to challenge the dominance of market leaders Apple Inc and Amazon.com Inc

The new service feature millions of songs from record labels EMI, Sony Music and Universal, but will not have music from Warner Group, the fourth of the major record labels.

Google, which introduced the service at an event at the Mr. Brainwash Studios in Hollywood, California on Wednesday, said consumers in the United States will be able to purchase the music through its Android Market, which offers smartphone apps, electronic books and videos.

To help jumpstart the new music store, Google said it will offer one free song for consumers to download everyday.

Google will also allow consumers to share purchased songs with friends on the Google+ social network. The feature will give users of Google+ a "free, full-play" of songs purchased by their friends.

Google is playing catch-up to its biggest rivals Apple, Amazon.com and Facebook, who have all to varying degrees integrated music into their core online and mobile products.

Analysts say selling online music is unlikely to provide much of a lift to Google's revenue. But they say Google needs to be in the market to ensure that its mobile efforts based on Android can match offerings from competitors such as Apple and Amazon.

Without a music service, Android devices such as smartphones and tablets may not seem as attractive to consumers looking for a product that offers a seamless media experience.

Wall Street falls as Europe's debt woes deepen (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Wall Street stocks rose slightly on Tuesday but lingering risk aversion tied to Europe's debt crisis sent Italy's bond yields back into a perceived danger zone, capping gains.

Italy's prime minister-designate raced to assemble a new government so he could speed up reforms and reverse a collapse in market confidence. The yield on Italy's 10-year benchmark bonds leaped above 7 percent, pushing government borrowing costs to a level widely seen as unsustainable.

Shares of U.S. banks, which are sensitive to flare-ups in Europe's debt crisis, were weak early. Citigroup Inc (C.N) fell 1.7 percent to $27.88.

A silver lining came in the form of stronger-than-expected retail sales in October and a report showing the New York manufacturing sector rose in November, ending five straight months of contraction.

But Doug Roberts, chief investment strategist at Channel Capital Research.com in Shrewsbury, New Jersey, said while the data were "OK but are not resounding," investors were still focused on Europe.

"It is what I call the elephant in the room," he said. "What people are thinking about more than anything is what could trigger a major recession and dislocation, and that's really Europe."

The Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) rose 12.64 points, or 0.10 percent, at 12,091.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index (.SPX) was up 2.01 points, or 0.16 percent, at 1,253.79. The Nasdaq Composite Index (.IXIC) put on 6.65 points, or 0.25 percent, at 2,663.87.

When Italian bond yields rose above 7 percent last week, the S&P 500 fell nearly 4 percent in one day. Heightened volatility has marked U.S. equities trading recently as investors fret about the debt crisis.

In the latest earnings reports, Wal-Mart Stores Inc's (WMT.N) quarterly profit missed expectations as the economy continues to weigh on customers at its U.S. unit, its largest division. Its shares dropped 1.8 percent to $57.81.

Home Depot Inc (HD.N) raised its fiscal-year outlook for the third time in six months as efforts to improve distribution and boost customer service helped the No. 1 home improvement chain gain share from archrival Lowe's Cos Inc (LOW.N). Home Depot rose 0.6 percent to $38.47.

US, Philippines boost alliance amid row with China (AP)

MANILA, Philippines ? In a highly symbolic ceremony aboard a guided-missile destroyer Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton underscored America's military and diplomatic backing for the Philippines as it engages in an increasingly tense territorial dispute with China in the resource-rich South China Sea.

On board the USS Fitzgerald in Manila Bay, Clinton and Philippine Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario signed a declaration calling for multilateral talks to resolve maritime disputes such as those in the South China Sea, contrasting China's policy of negotiating one-on-one with the Philippines and other Asian claimants.

"The United States does not take any position on any territorial claim," Clinton said after meeting with President Benigno Aquino III. But Clinton told a forum with young students that Washington is "very strongly against any nation using coercion or intimidation instead of using the law to try to resolve these issues."

Clinton flew later Wednesday to Thailand, where she announced a $10 million aid package for the flood-stricken country. She planned to visit a flood victims evacuation center on Thursday.

Clinton said her discussions with Philippine officials focused on strengthening the Philippines' defense "to have a credible deterrent, to be able to protect what is yours and to be able to pursue lawful activities, whether it's for fishing or exploration for gas and oil."

The Philippines and Vietnam have accused Chinese vessels of repeatedly intruding into areas they claim in the potentially oil-rich Spratly Islands in the South China Sea and of trying to sabotage oil explorations in their territorial waters. China has denied the allegations, saying it has sovereignty over the vast sea.

"We are making sure that our collective defense capabilities and communications infrastructure are operationally and materially capable of deterring provocations," Clinton said aboard the Fitzgerald, a U.S. Navy vessel that has operated in the South China Sea.

Del Rosario urged the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, which includes the Philippines, Vietnam and two other claimant countries, on Tuesday to host an unprecedented meeting of countries embroiled in the Spratly dispute. Beijing opposed any multilateral discussion of the issue, including at an East Asian summit this week in Bali, Indonesia, to be attended by President Barack Obama and other world leaders.

Defying China, Clinton said the U.S. "will certainly expect and participate in very open and frank discussions," including on the maritime challenges in the region.

The Manila Declaration signed by Clinton and del Rosario commemorated the 60th anniversary of the allies' Mutual Defense Treaty. It calls for "maintaining freedom of navigation, unimpeded lawful commerce, and transit of people across the seas."

Asked if intensified U.S. military aid would mean sending more troops to the Philippines, Clinton did not clearly reply but said any future deployments would be temporary, citing local sensitivities.

Dozens of left-wing activists calling for the abrogation of a treaty that allows U.S. troop and ship visits to the country hurled red paint on part of her convoy, and a student unfurled an anti-treaty poster and heckled Clinton as she spoke at the forum with young students.

Asked about the convoy incident, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said a crowd of 40 or 50 protesters hurled eggs, paint-filled baloons and maybe a few rocks but no one was hurt. The vehicle in which Clinton was traveling was not hit, he said.

In addition to China, the Philippines and Vietnam, the Spratlys are also claimed by Taiwan, Malaysia and Brunei. The dispute has been feared as Asia's next flash point for conflict.

The U.S. has angered China by saying it has a stake in security and unhampered international commerce in the South China Sea. China says American involvement will only complicate the issue.

The Philippines, whose poorly equipped forces are no match for China's powerful military, has resorted to diplomatic protests and turned to Washington for support. Aquino has insisted his country won't be bullied by China.

A senior U.S. State Department official traveling with Clinton told reporters that America's military assistance to the Philippines will increasingly shift to bolstering its naval power.

For nearly a decade, the U.S. military has been providing counterterrorism training, weapons and intelligence to help Filipino troops battle al-Qaida-linked groups in the nation's south. Those include the Abu Sayyaf, a small but violent group listed by Washington as a terrorist organization, and its allied militants from the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah group.

"We are now in the process ... of diversifying and changing the nature of our engagement," the U.S. official said Tuesday on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the information. "We will continue those efforts in the south, but we are focusing more on maritime capabilities and other aspects of expeditionary military power."

The U.S. recently provided the Philippines with a destroyer, and the official said a second one will be delivered soon.
