Dow plunges more than 200 after dismal jobs report

Stocks fell sharply Friday after the release of a dismal report on hiring and employment in the United States. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped more than 200 points, erasing what was left of its gain for the year.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index and Nasdaq composite index both fell more than 2 percent in the first 90 minutes of trading. The Dow was on track for its steepest one-day drop since November.

American employers added just 69,000 jobs in May, the fewest in a year, and the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2 percent from 8.1 percent. Economists had forecast a gain of 158,000 jobs.

The report, considered the most important economic indicator each month, also said that hiring in March and April was considerably weaker than originally thought.

"The big worry now is that this economic slowdown is widening and accelerating," said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at S&P Capital IQ, a market research firm.

About two hours into trading, the Dow was down 218 points at 12,175, leaving it with a loss of 0.3 percent for the year. Earlier this year, the Dow was up more than 8 percent.

Economic data from Europe and Asia also came in weak. Traders sold all types of risky investments and stampeded toward the safety of U.S. government bonds. Bond prices rose sharply, and the yield on the benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note touched 1.44 percent, the lowest on record.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was down 25 points at 1,284. The Nasdaq was off 60 at 2,767. Both indexes were still up for the year ? about 2 percent for the S&P and 6 percent for the Nasdaq.

May was by some measures the worst month for the stock market in two years. Investors' worries about Europe's debt crisis intensified as the month wore on.

The jobs report drew traders' attention back to the weakening U.S. economy, said Todd Salamone, director of research for Schaeffer's Investment Research in Cincinnati.

"The weaker jobs report translates into anticipation of slower growth ahead and weaker corporate earnings, and that ratchets stock prices lower," Salamone said.

Stovall said that traders are waiting to see what governments and central banks might do to juice global economic activity. Otherwise, the losses would be even deeper, he said.

The Fed launched bond-buying programs in 2009 and 2010 to lower interest rates and help stock prices, but it has resisted a third round of that approach, known as quantitative easing.

Anticipation of bond-buying by the Fed "might put in a little bit of a floor to the market, but the overall economic picture is still bad," said Bob Gelfond, CEO of MQS Asset Management, a New York hedge fund.

The price of gold shot higher. It rose $49 an ounce to $1,613. For much of the past three years, investors have bought gold for safety during a turbulent time for the world economy.

The dollar weakened. The euro rose half a penny against the dollar to $1.24. The price of a barrel of oil fell more than $3 to $83.05, extending a monthlong slide.

Gold spiked and the dollar fell partly because traders expect more intervention by the Federal Reserve, Gelfond said.

Bond-buying adds to the supply of money coursing through the economy and leads some investors to worry about future inflation, which would make the dollar less valuable. Traders buy gold as a hedge against inflation.

Stocks fell broadly. Only 20 companies in the S&P were higher for the day.

Homebuilders led the market lower, despite a report that construction spending rose for a second month in April. PulteGroup fell 10 percent, D.R. Horton 9 percent and Lennar 8 percent. The three had the biggest declines of companies in the S&P 500.

Boeing, the biggest U.S. exporter, fell 2.5 percent, one of the biggest declines among the 30 companies that make up the Dow. Traders fear that the economic slowdown will hurt global demand for its airplanes and defense technologies.

The job picture remained dark elsewhere in the world. Unemployment in the 17 countries that use the euro currency stayed at a record-high 11 percent in April, and unemployment rose spiked to almost 25 percent in Spain.

There were also signs that growth in China, which was a bulwark during the global recession, is slowing significantly. China's manufacturing weakened in May, according to surveys released Friday.

Stocks were down considerably in Europe. Benchmark stock indexes fell about 4 percent in Germany and Greece, and nearly 3 percent in France. British stocks were down but fared slightly better.

Ethernet Over Fiber Can Increase Business Productivity | Aeron Chairs

t is now an indisputable fact that each one companies that have a vision and mission geared at success will need to have Ethernet over fiber. All that talk about Fiber optic cable being the proverbial 'pot of gold' of the IT future is true however there has by no means been a time when Ethernet was wanted more than it is now. Web speeds need to turn into quicker now, not later.

Telecom services and businesses that are reliant on them have for a long time relied on copper connections. This often begins with installing the binder cable at the building construction stage. The several pairs of twisted copper provide a telephone service that is multiline and which has for a long time been the fundamental kind for businesses. One more reason why many people favor copper pairs is as a result of they can be used for digital trunking in PBX systems and point to level linking of businesses. Many people have subsequently gotten used to the thought of utilizing this as the way to get infrastructure for their companies and they do not know every other way.

The future of Ethernet of fiber

Occasions have modified and changed drastically with regard to broadband providers and obtain speeds. One of the simplest ways to know this is by sampling some of what consumers are actually going for. The 2 megabits per second downloads are a factor of a very old past. On the very least, a consumer calls for 6 mbps and lots of need the 50mbps obtain speeds. These speeds at the moment are attainable thanks to the DOCSIS 3.0modem.

You can hire efficient virtual assistants at Myoutdesk.com.

Very high internet speeds are the future. That is perhaps the explanation why there may be want for everybody to improve their current bandwidth. Increased bandwidth comes with higher purposes which can be used for companies and because of this the world is headed for higher audio and video purposes with Ethernet over fiber services. It is virtually wishful pondering to work at these speeds with out the fiber connections. In specific conditions Ethernet over fiber can go as much as 50 megabits per second. The nice thing with Ethernet services is that they don't seem to be location specific. They will work anywhere.

The cost of Ethernet providers

Ethernet over fiber is certainly the business resolution that everyone needs to go for and this isn't without reason. It is an especially cost-efficient enterprise solution. It's much more costly than the T1 lines particularly when considered on a per megabit basis. One can begin at an average speed and slowly build up offered the mechanism can withstand higher speeds.

"Flame" malware greatly expands the scope of cyber warfare

The discovery of a new species of highly sophisticated malware earlier this week adds another puzzle piece to the contemporary cyberwar battleground.?Flame, as it?s called, is a whopper of a program?20 megabytes, the size of a video file, and 40 times bigger than the Stuxnet virus that took down Iranium centrifuges back in 2010.? But Flame is not just another cyber weapon?it could greatly expand the scope of nations capable of carrying out cyberattacks.

Flame bears many similarities to Stuxnet. Both are specimens of highly advanced programming and detailed expertise in many specialized areas. Both programs are the products of large teams of experts working hundreds of hours on development and testing. Only a handful of nations have the technical capacity to do this kind of work. The list would include the United States, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, Israel and Taiwan, says Scott Borg, head of U.S. Cyber Consequences Unit, a security consulting firm.

But Flame differs from Stuxnet in many important respects. Whereas Stuxnet was designed for a specific purpose?infiltrating and destroying the centrifuges used in Iran?s nuclear fuel enrichment facility at Natanz?Flame appears to be a general purpose tool for espionage. It has a broad ability to gather data from screenshots or through Bluetooth connections with other devices.? Once Flame makes it onto a computer, it begins ?sniffing the network traffic, taking screenshots, recording audio conversations, intercepting the keyboard, and so on,? says a May 28 report by security firm Kaspersky.?It can compress and encrypt the information it captures and hold onto it until it has a reliable Internet connection to send it?Flame was apparently?targeted to countries in the Middle East?it was showed up mainly in Iran, with infections also in Israel, the Palestinian territories, Sudan and?Syria.

Perhaps the biggest potential problem ?is that the programmers who designed Flame did not try and disguise the code in a way that makes it difficult to reverse engineer. The practice, known as ?code obfuscation,? is common among commercial software developers as a way to keep competitors from being able to figure out how software products are designed. Flame programmers apparently didn?t take such measures, which means a knowledgeable programmer wouldn?t have too much trouble extracting the pertinent design of Flame and making use of it. Flame, in other words, is a boomerang.

That?s not to say that just anyone can download Flame and start using it, of course. It still requires expertise to understand how the program works. But the lack of code obfuscation adds ?dozens? of states to the list of those capable of carrying out sophisticated cyber attacks, says Borg. That may very well include Iran, whose programmers almost certainly are studying the malware as we speak. The failure to protect the Flame code from being reverse engineered may turn out to have been a monumental error.

Who designed Flame isn?t clear. ?David Sanger?s article in today?s New York Times confirms that Stuxnet was authored by the United States. Indeed, a clear pattern of U.S. offensive cyber warfare has been taking shape in recent years. In December, a security expert asserted that the Conficker worm, which has infiltrated millions of ordinary PCs over many years, could have served as a ?door kicker? for Stuxnet?a program that went out into the field and set the stage for the Stuxnet invasion. At this point, there isn?t enough information about Flame to know who authored it.? It?s safe to assume, however, that the cyber battlefield is about to get more crowded.

ed note: Stuxnet code was not protected against reverse engineering, either, but this is less of a problem because its purpose is narrow and hence the programming is less useful as a weapon than the more general-purpose Flame. This post was corrected to reflect this.
