Small and midsize businesses' spending on security technology is growing at a healthy clip and is set to pass $5.6 billion in 2015, according to a new report from IDC. In fact, SMBs' spending on security products and services is?projected to nearly double the 5 percent to 6 percent annual growth projected for SMBs' overall IT spending, the report said.

The increasing adoption of cloud computing and the prevalence of connected mobile devices?not to mention IT?s struggles with fast-growing bring-your-own-device (BYOD) programs?have sparked growth in SMBs' security spending, according to IDC.

State Farm & Ford Working to Lower Insurance Costs - Car Insurance

And now, Ford Motor Company, the second largest automaker in the United States is getting into the act, collaborating with State Farm, the nation?s largest auto insurer.

Owners of select Ford vehicles equipped with Ford?s SYNC will be able to utilize the ?Vehicle Health Report? contained within the SYNC system to report their milage when enrolled in State Farm?s ?Drive Safe & Save? policies.

Like all pay as you go policies, the number of miles driven will impact any potential for savings on a driver?s premiums. Once a policyholder enrolls, they?re given an immediate discount of approximately 5 percent.

Further savings will then be determined by State Farm at each policy renewal date, which typically takes place every six months. Those savings are directly related to the miles driven. If a driver is at the national average of approximately 12,000 miles per year, they can expect to save another 10 percent off their premiums. But those who drive significantly less than that will qualify as ?low-milage drivers? and may see savings that are up to 40 percent off what they paid before.

?We?re excited to have Ford as a partner in this effort,? said State Farm Senior Vice President Mike Wey. ?State Farm is always looking for better ways to serve our customers.?

Ford?s SYNC system is an in-car connectivity solution that allows drivers to use vocal commands to control entertainment options, their cell phones, and MP3 players. Drivers need not take their eyes off the road, as the system can read back emails and text messages, as well as take dictation for responses. It also offers 911 assist, an emergency calling system allowing drivers to contact police and other first responders in the event they need assistance.

But SYNC also offers more?functionality?than just info-tainment. For example, the ?Vehicle Health Report? gives drivers a diagnostic report about their car, as well as?keeping?owners informed of maintenance schedules. It also records milage directly to the car?s engine computer, which means it?s considered ?verified? by State Farm, rather than simply being a user reported figure. Thus, State Farm qualified SYNC for use with their Drive Safe & Save policies.

UAVs fly wireless power to remote locations

Anyone with an energy-gobbling smartphone knows the pain of having your battery run out while off-grid, but while you can always charge up when you return home, getting power to sensors placed in remote locations is more difficult. Now researchers at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in the US have come up with a solution - a flying wireless battery mounted on a quadrotor UAV.

The team use a technique called strongly coupled magnetic resonances, in which current in a coil of wire on the UAV generates a magnetic field that resonates with a second coil in the sensor, inducing a voltage and allowing it to charge up.

How much power can be transmitted depends on how far the UAV is from the sensor. When hovering at an optimal distance of 20 centimetres the system can transfer 5.5 watts with an efficiency of 35 per cent, enough to power a small light. Once the juice runs low, the UAV can simply fly back to base and recharge.

The researchers say their system could be used to charge "highway messaging?systems, ecological sensors located in forests, or sensors?shallowly embedded underground or in concrete." And with civilian drone usage taking off, UAVs could soon be delivering power to pretty much anywhere.

Alan Scott, a.k.a. the Green Lantern, is officially coming out of the closet.

The DC Comics staple, who was first introduced in 1940 as a husband and father, is a homosexual in Earth 2's new comic, being released next week.

The comic-book giant approved author James Robinson's character-altering decision “without hesitation.” Here's GL making out with his boyfriend:

“He’s very much the character he was,” James tells the New York Post of the change. “He’s still the pinnacle of bravery and idealism. He’s also gay.”

Interestingly enough, Alan’s son Obsidian was gay, but the rebooting of Alan as a young man means erasing the existence of his kids altogether.

“So I thought, ‘Why not make Alan Scott gay?’” James says of his decision to alter his sexual orientation. “That was the seed that started it.”

It's unclear if this particular seed he planted will encourage other superheroes to come out, or will increase or decrease interest in GL's exploits.

It's unlikely, though, that Ryan Reynolds' version of The Green Lantern will change teams in the much-anticipated sequel to last year's film.

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? The most experienced speller remaining in the National Spelling Bee breezed through most of two semifinal rounds with his usual confidence. But with one word separating him from his first time in the finals, he was flustered.

"Kanaima."

Nicholas Rushlow went through the usual checklist, asking the definition ? an evil spirit, believed to be an avenger. Next he asked for the country of origin, which was British Guyana. Pronouncer Jacques Bailly used it in two sentences.

"Is there anything else I didn't ask?" Rushlow said.

After getting the word right, he mouthed a word that was easy to spell ? "Whoa!" ? then bounded back to his seat and high-fived his few remaining competitors.

Out of 278 participants who gathered at a convention center outside Washington, nine made it to the finals Thursday evening. They nailed words derived from Greek, Latin, French, German, Hawaiian and Afrikaans. They got proper names and obscure medical terms.

Snigdha Nandipati was first up in the finals. The 14-year-old avid reader from San Diego correctly spelled "psammon," which means an ecological community.

Hours earlier, Lena Greenberg, an excitable home-schooled 14-year-old from Philadelphia, became the last to make the finals when she spelled "cholecystitis" ? an inflammation of the gallbladder. She said she didn't know the word but was able to piece it together. After spelling it right, she ran back to her chair, handed out high fives and buried her face in her hands.

"It means so much," Greenberg said. "I can't believe I got here! It doesn't make sense. There were a lot of the words in the semifinals I didn't know."

Forty-one semifinalists, meanwhile, heard the dreaded bell that signals an incorrect spelling. Those included one of the favorites, 10-year-old Vanya Shivashankar of Olathe, Kan. The younger sister of the 2009 champion got the only perfect score in the preliminary rounds.

Breezily confident through the first two semifinal rounds, Shivashankar was flummoxed by "pejerrey," a small fish. She went with "perjere."

"Thank you," she said, and walked offstage with her head held high. She'll have three more years to compete if she chooses.

This is Rushlow's last chance. The 14-year-old from Pickerington, Ohio, has competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee every year since 2008. Last summer, in between swimming practices, he spelled every word in the dictionary for practice, a process that took 600 hours. His mother estimates he's spent 8,000 hours studying over the past five years.

He also has his quirks: He eats pancakes before every bee and has worn the same shirt, a yellow polo with black-and-white stripes, the past three years. He owns more than one and wasn't sure if he had on the same one he wore Wednesday.

"My mom handles that," Rushlow said.

The other fifth-time competitor, Rahul Malayappan, did not make the finals.

Arvind Mahankali, 12, of Bayside Hills, N.Y., a finalist the last two years, made it three years in a row when he spelled "phrontistery." A tennis player and aspiring physicist, he raised his arms in victory as he walked away from the microphone.

The finalists also include Gifton Wright of Spanish Town, Jamaica, who could become the second Jamaican winner in spelling bee history. His coach, the Rev. Glen Archer, also guided the previous Jamaican winner, Jody-Anne Maxwell, in 1998.

Wearing a hooded black cardigan with green trim that suggested the Jamaican flag, Wright got to the finals by spelling "Gleichschaltung," the process of achieving uniformity through oppression.

"I knew it," the unfailingly polite 14-year-old said afterward.

When asked how he knew it, he told a reporter: "Training, sir."

This week, Scripps announced tentative plans for a world spelling bee with teams of spellers from dozens of countries. Once that gets off the ground, the National Spelling Bee would be closed to international participants.

This year's winner gets $30,000 in cash, a trophy, a $2,500 savings bond, a $5,000 scholarship, $2,600 in reference works from the Encyclopedia Britannica and an online language course.

The other finalists are Snigdha Nandipati, 14, of San Diego; Frank Cahill, 14, of Parker, Colo.; Stuti Mishra, 14, of West Melbourne, Fla.; Jordan Hoffman, 14, of Lee's Summit, Mo.; and Emma Ciereszynski, 14, of Dover, N.H.

Ciereszynski spelled "ouabain" ? a toxic substance used as poison on an arrow ? to make the finals.

"I think I might know this!" she said after the word was read. As Bailly read the definition, she smiled, giggled and bounced on her heels.

Her place in the finals secured, she held up her arms and exclaimed, "Yes!"
