In Iowa Caucus, Young Voters Could Be Crucial

First electoral event of the year takes place Tuesday, and MTV is on the scene.

When it comes to presidential politics, Iowa is #1 in line, no matter what. Though it only serves up around 1 percent of the national delegates in presidential contests, pundits and political junkies have looked to the Hawkeye State for more than 40 years for an early indication of who will represent the party in the race for the White House.

With President Obama facing no Democratic challenger in his bid for a second term, all the attention at Tuesday's Iowa caucus will be focused on the Republicans vying to come out on top in Iowa: Ron Paul, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, Rick Santorum, Rick Perry and Jon Huntsman.

As of press time, libertarian rabble-rouser Paul was in the lead, in part due to his dedicated core of young supporters. Frequently ignored by the national media, Paul is an enigma in this year's GOP field thanks to his views on legalizing drugs and abolishing the departments of Education and Commerce, among others.

But according to the latest Public Policy Poll, Paul was leading the pack at 23 percent, followed by Romney at 20 and the fast-fading Gingrich at 14. Not surprisingly, Texas congressman Paul is well ahead with voters under the age of 45, with 33 percent of their likely votes compared to Romney's 16.

But the Huffington Post reported that what remains to be seen is whether those hard-partying college students intent on casting their votes for Paul will show up to the caucuses after whooping it up on New Year's Eve and slowly making their way back to campus after the long winter break.

Unlike most of the primaries over the next few months and the general election, Iowans will not walk into a voting booth and pull a lever, punch a card or swipe a touch screen to help vault one of the candidates into an early lead. In a quirky throwback to a previous time, they'll gather in meeting halls, school gymnasiums and even living rooms to hash out their choices, a scenario that could be disorienting for young voters who may be casting ballots for the first time.

With 1,774 caucuses statewide, any registered voter can show up at his or her local caucus meeting after pre-registering as a party member. Once there (the events begin promptly at 7 p.m. and last about an hour), they'll hear bids from representatives of the candidates and then chat with friends, neighbors and strangers about the strengths and weaknesses of the various candidates as well as about issues that concern them.

After everyone has said their piece, they'll vote in a paper-ballot straw poll and choose their delegates to the state convention. Those 40 Republican National Convention delegates don't have to immediately declare which candidate they support, but the press will quickly declare a winner based on the percentage of delegates won by each candidate.

Unlike in years past, most of the leading candidates for the GOP nomination have not lavished the same kind of attention on Iowa that past presidential hopefuls have. That's likely the reason why a recent Iowa State University/ Gazette/ KCRG-TV9 poll found that with just one week to go, nearly 38 percent of respondents said they were still trying to decide their vote, with another 34 percent saying they were leaning one way and only 28 percent locked in on the candidate they were definitely supporting.

In other words, no matter who has the lead going into Tuesday night, there could be a major upset in the making if the candidates' last-minute barnstorming blitzes have a big impact on Iowa voters used to lots of face time with their candidates.

Plus, the winner doesn't always take the prize, as in 2008, when former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee came in first in Iowa, despite Romney's lavish spending of around $12,000 per vote. That's why candidates have historically spent months and months meeting Iowa voters and introducing themselves over and over in order to pass the most crucial Hawkeye exam: the likability test.

Once the dust clears, after months of campaigning and 13 televised debates, the national press will anoint a legitimate front-runner and a number of the candidates with the lowest totals will likely hang it up.

How To Unlock and Root The Verizon Galaxy Nexus (Easy Way)

One of the nice things about the Galaxy Nexus is the ability to unlock the bootloader and install custom ROMS and modifications.

I showed you how to unlock the Galaxy Nexus already, but I found a much easier method for unlocking and rooting the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon.

Read: Galaxy Nexus Review

This guide will show you how to unlock and root the Galaxy Nexus on a Windows PC or a Mac, and takes significantly less time and effort.

Before you unlock and rot your Galaxy Nexus, know that it does void your warranty and there is a possibility of breaking your phone. If that happens we are not responsible.

What You Need

  1. Verizon Galaxy Nexus
  2. SuperBoot
  3. Samsung Driver
  4. Additional USB Drivers
  5. A Backup of your files

This process will erase?everything?on your phone. Before you unlock your phone, be sure to backup your photos and files to your computer. If you are on a Mac, you?ll need this guide to connect the Galaxy Nexus to a Mac.

How to Unlock and Root the Galaxy Nexus

Before we start, turn on USB Debugging on your Galaxy Nexus by going to Settings ? > Developer Options -> Turn on USB Debugging.

1. Unzip Superboot.

2. Open the folder and copy all of those files by pressing Ctrl+A and then Ctrl+C.

3. Go to My Computer, Go to Your C: drive and create a folder called root.

4. Paste those files in this new folder.

Root

5. While in your root folder hold shift and right-click. Choose Open Command Here.

On MAC

? Open Terminal.

? Type cd C:/ and press enter.

? Type cd root.

Open command window here

6. Turn your phone off.

7. Plug it into your computer.

8. Hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power until it boots into bootloader mode. You?ll see a screen shown above.

9. If the drivers do not install correctly, you will need to open up Device Manager on your computer and choose the Samsung USB drivers.

- Unzip the Samsung Drivers you downloaded to somewhere you can find, the Desktop is a good place.

- Click Start and choose Control Panel.

- Click on System and Security

- Choose Device Manager

Once in Device Manager, look for an entry that says Android 1.0 with a yellow exclamation point next to it.

- Double click to open it up.

- Click on Update Driver.

Update Driver

- Choose Browse my computer for driver software.

- Navigate to the driver folder on your desktop and click Open.

- This should install the file and allow your computer to connect to your Galaxy Nexus.

10. Go back to the Command Prompt you opened up earlier.

11. type fastboot-windows oem unlock and hit Enter.

On Mac ? ./fastboot-mac oem unlock in Terminal

Unlock the Galaxy Nexus on Verizon

12. When your phone asks if you want to ?Unlock Bootloader?? use the volume button to choose yes and press power to select.

13. You?ll be back at the Bootloader screen, but?should?see unlocked at the bottom of your phone?s screen.

Don?t unplug or restart your phone yet

14. Open up your root folder on your computer and double click on install-superboot-windows.bat.

root Galaxy Nexus

15. Your phone should root and go to the Black Google Screen shown below.

Google Screen Root the Galaxy Nexus

16. Your phone will stay on this screen for 5 to 15 minutes. Do not pull the battery until at least fifteen minutes have passed or you could break your phone. I had to wait 15 minutes and pull the battery to get this to work.

If your phone gets stuck in the boot sequence, flashing the Google startup color sequence, do not pull the battery. Wait the 10 ? 15 minutes and try to turn off the phone by holding the power button. If all else fails, you can try?pulling?the battery, but only after you have waited 10 t 15 minutes.

You are now unlocked and rooted. If you want to know what to do next, I suggest you check out Chris?s Custom Galaxy Nexus setup.

Lumia 800 Battery Test Results (Vs. N9, iPhone, Galaxy Nexus?)

GSMarenas Battery test for the Lumia 800 are in; and the results are bittersweet. Just to keep?things?in?perspective for everyone; the main comparison should?be between the Lumia 800 and the N9, considering that they both have the same battery, same type of screen and almost the same screen size (Lumia 800 is .2 inches smaller screen-wise).

3G talk time:

Ooooo Pretty colors!

As you can tell from the graph above the 800 did quite decent in regards to 3G talk time, scoring the 4th highest battery life on leaderboard, with almost an hour and a half more talking time than it?s twin the N9. In fact according to GSM arena the 800 was the WP device with the longest talk-time.

?The Lumia 800 also outdid the other Windows Phone smartphones we have tested so far ? HTC Radar and Samsung i937 Focus S.?

Video playback:

Unfortunately the 800 didn?t do as well in video playback scoring a?meager ?5:52? while the slightly larger screened N9 scored ?8:40?. that?s almost 2 hours more!!

Web Browsing:

Even worse is the web browsing times, the 800 barely lasted 4 hours! ?(N9 was about 30 minutes more), of course this is mainly due to Amoled screens not playing nice with Web page backgrounds; but still kinda sad.

Find the full review over at GSM Arena:?http://blog.gsmarena.com/nokia-lumia-800-battery-test-now-over-see-how-it-did-test/

Side Note: after testing the 800 GSM arena did the battery tests on Androids latest flagship ?The Galaxy Nexus?? (which if you recall beat out the 800 for?gizmodos gadget of the year) the Nexus scored almost the same as the 800 when it came to Talk Time and Video playback, but if you thought the 4 hours on the 800 was bad, well then? the Nexus just?scraped 3 hours of browsing time! That?s just?embarrassing?

(Nexus Battery Review here:?http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery-life-fully-tested-results-come-out-disappointing-test/?)

*Note: I?m not sure what the status of the 800 they tested on is but I?m assuming that it wasn?t suffering any severe undercapacity issues, still there is hope for the 800 once Nokia release the battery fix (rumored to be Jan 18th)

Maldives closes hundreds of luxury resort spas (AP)

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka ? Maldives ordered hundreds of its luxury resorts to close their spas nearly a week after a protest led by opposition parties demanding a halt to "anti-Islamic" activities, the government said Friday.

A statement from the president's office said "the government has decided to close massage parlors and spas in the Maldives, following an opposition-led religious protest last week calling for their closure."

An official from the president's office said the tourism ministry notified the resorts Thursday but hasn't confirmed if the spas have been closed. He spoke on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak on the matter.

The Indian Ocean archipelago with 1,192 tiny coral islands is known for its exquisite resorts.

Thousands at last week's protest called on the government to halt what they called "anti-Islamic" activities. Sunni Islam is the official religion in the Maldives and practicing any other faith is forbidden.

Last week's protest was called by the opposition Adhaalat, or Justice, Party and several other groups that accuse President Mohammed Nasheed's government of compromising principles of Islam and want strict Islamic law.

The protesters also want authorities to stop the sale of alcohol in the islands, shut down brothels operating in the guise of massage parlors and demolish monuments gifted by other countries marking a South Asian summit last month because they see them as idols.

They also wanted to halt a plan to allow direct flights to Israel.

Though the country does not allow stoning or executions, it is under scrutiny for its absence of religious freedom and for punishments such as public flogging.

Debates on religious issues have emerged since a group vandalized a monument gifted by Pakistan marking a South Asian summit last month with the image of Buddha. Buddhism was part of the present Islamic republic's history.

An angry protest last month followed a call by U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay for the Maldives to end floggings of women being punished for adultery.
