The bickering between the two Minnesota Republicans running for president, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty and Rep. Michele Bachmann, is getting pretty loud and angry. But it?s not surprising. It reflects their different roles in the GOP, and the white-knuckle pressure they both face as the 2012 contest moves toward its first real test in Iowa.

Pawlenty has made his "executive experience" and "results" as governor a centerpiece of his campaign, complemented by his eager adoption of harsh Tea Party stances that seem less than perfectly authentic coming from this mild-mannered Minnesotan. But recently, subthemes critical to his two most prominent rivals have been creeping into his self-laudatory discourse:

"We got one leading candidate in this race who's running away from his record. We got another leading candidate in this race who has no record. I'm running on my record. That's a big difference," Pawlenty said.

He continued: "Well I think when you want to think about making somebody president you want to know some things. You want to know what have they done, not just by flapping their jaw or giving speeches or offering failed amendments in Congress. What have they really done? What results have they achieved?"

Pawlenty?s campaign has sharpened this thinly veiled reference to Bachmann?s jaw-flapping and speechifying and symbolic amendment-offering by comparing it to the record of a certain socialist Muslim in the White House when he began running for president in 2008.

After Pawlenty incautiously piled onto allegations that Bachmann?s migraines might occasionally incapacitate her as president (a comment he soon walked back), something seemed to snap in the Bachmann campaign, which soon released a missive turning the tables on Pawlenty?s innuendoes about their candidate?s similarities to Obama. Governor Pawlenty would have us believe that there is 'very little difference' between his positions and those of Michele Bachmann.

But in fact, there is very little difference between Governor Pawlenty?s past positions and Barack Obama?s positions on several critical issues facing Americans. On issues such as unconstitutional healthcare mandates, climate change regulations, and Wall Street bailouts, there?s very little daylight, indeed, between Governor Pawlenty?s record and the Obama administration?s policies.

And of course, President Obama would surely applaud Governor Pawlenty?s 2006 statement that the 'era of small government is over,' and that the government will have to be 'more proactive and more aggressive.'

Governor Pawlenty has changed his positions in recent years, but he can?t run from his big government record as governor of Minnesota that left the state?s budget in a multi-billion dollar mess. That?s not executive experience we need.

Ouchy ouchy. Coming from someone (or at least the surrogates of someone) who served in the Minnesota Senate while Pawlenty was a House leader and then governor, Bachmann?s blast has some credibility. Her attack on his fiscal record, moreover, echoes Democratic complaints about his signature accomplishment as governor (balancing the budget without tax increases), and also reflects her role in the Minnesota GOP as an ideological enforcer suspicious of "pragmatic" pols like Pawlenty. She clearly aims to spread those doubts to hardcore conservatives -- who cannot help but view Bachmann as one of their own -- in Iowa and elsewhere.

Similarly, both candidates signed a pledge (which Mitt Romney, Herman Cain and Jon Huntsman refused to sign) proferred by the upstart radical anti-choice group the Susan B. Anthony List promising to pursue national restrictions similar to the bans on abortions prior to 20 weeks being enacted by several states and a ban on any federal funding for any institution -- including hospitals -- performing entirely legal abortions. But Bachmann again got to Pawlenty's right on social issues by signing the Iowa-based Family Leader's "marriage vow" committing the candidate to fight not only for an end to same-sex marriages but for restrictive divorce laws and bans on porn.

With all the Iowa campaigns in a teeth-grinding frenzy in the run-up to the Iowa GOP?s straw poll in Ames on Aug. 13, these sort of fine distinctions matter to the conservative activists most avid to participate in that event and the caucuses themselves. Pawlenty is currently fighting for his political life in Iowa, while Bachmann is fighting to hold onto the Iowa front-runner status -- and the high expectations associated with it. SERANG, Indonesia (AFP) ? An Indonesian court sent a "chilling message" Thursday by giving Muslim extremists light sentences for a vicious mob attack in which three sect members died, rights activists said.

Twelve people stood trial but none faced murder charges in what human rights campaigners said was a travesty of justice in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.

The sentences ranged from between three and six months' jail -- less than prosecutors had sought and well below the maximum penalty of 12 years.

Dani bin Misra, a 17-year-old who repeatedly smashed a victim's skull with a stone, was sentenced to three months in jail for manslaughter.

Idris bin Mahdani, who led the 1,500-strong mob in the February attack, was convicted of illegal possession of a machete and received five months and 15 days in jail.

Most of the convicted men are likely to walk free within weeks, observers said.

"The Cikeusik trial sends the chilling message that attacks on minorities like the Ahmadiyah will be treated lightly by the legal system," Human Rights Watch deputy chief for Asia Phil Robertson told AFP.

"This is a sad day for justice in Indonesia."

In rare criticism of its Southeast Asian ally, the United States said it was "disappointed by the disproportionately light sentences", which came within days of a visit to Indonesia by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"The United States encourages Indonesia to defend its tradition of tolerance for all religions, a tradition praised by President (Barack) Obama in his November 2010 visit to Jakarta," a US embassy statement said.

The Obama administration resumed military ties with Indonesia's notorious special forces unit last year, citing improvements in the human rights situation in the country.

The European Union delegation in Jakarta expressed "strong concerns" over the light sentences.

The violence against the Ahmadiyah sect members in Cikeusik, western Java, was one of the most horrific in a long line of attacks on the minority group in Indonesia in recent years.

Ahmadiyah, unlike mainstream Muslims, do not believe Mohammed was the last prophet and are regarded as heretics and blasphemers by conservatives in countries such as Indonesia and Pakistan.

A secretly filmed video of the Cikeusik rampage sparked international concern when it appeared online within days of the attack. The reaction in Indonesia, however, was muted.

The footage shows police fleeing the scene as the enraged mob -- armed with machetes and knives and shouting abuse at the "infidels" -- launched an unprovoked attack on a house owned by an Ahmadiyah follower.

A handful of Ahmadiyah men tried to defend the property with stones and slingshots but they were quickly overwhelmed. Then the killing began.

The mob clubbed and stoned their defenceless victims to death in front of police, then stood around and joked over their shattered bodies. Several Ahmadiyah tried to flee but were hunted down and badly beaten.

Robertson said the appalling "savagery" demanded a strong response from a country which has ratified international covenants on freedom of religion and claims to have a pluralistic religious tradition.

"But instead of charging the defendants with murder and other serious crimes, prosecutors came up with an almost laughable list of ?slap-on-the wrist? charges," he said.

Prosecutors managed to convince the court that the video justified a reduced sentence for the killers.

Meanwhile Ahmadiyah member Deden Sujana is facing up to four years in jail on charges of incitement, disobeying police orders and maltreatment because he ignored police orders to evacuate the house.

Ahmadiyah spokesman Zafrullah Ahmad Pontoh was cautious in his response to the sentences. "Let the legal power handle the case. It's only a worldly punishment," he said.

"We'll forgive those who ask us for forgiveness, but so far we haven't heard them asking us for forgiveness."

The graphic footage, which is available on the video-sharing website YouTube, was filmed by an Ahmadiyah follower who mingled with the attackers and watched his friends being murdered.

The man is now in hiding under police protection, fearing for his life.

New Therapy Could Boost Kidney Transplant Survival Rates (LiveScience.com)

A treatment to filter out antibodies from kidney patients' blood before their transplant surgery could double survival rates in certain hard-to-match transplant patients, a new study says.

These patients, mostly women, are typically ineligible for kidney transplants ? their risk of rejecting a new organ is very high, so they need to be even more closely matched to a donor than usual.

The new treatment could lower their risk of rejection, and potentially boost the number of living donor kidney transplants performed each year by 2,000 to 3,000, the researchers said.

"That would be the single biggest increase in live donor transplantation that we've had in several decades," said study researcher Dr. Robert Montgomery, a professor of surgery at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

The study will be published tomorrow (July 28) in the New England Journal of Medicine.

A risk too high

About 1 in 3 kidney transplant patients are very likely to reject a new organ. That's because they have previously been exposed to foreign tissue, either from a blood transfusion, pregnancy or a previous organ transplant, and their immune systems are now primed to mount a swift, forceful attack against a donor organ.

Even organs that are closely enough matched that other patients' bodies would accept them would be attacked by these patients' bodies, so their pool of potential donors is extremely narrow.

And because exposure to foreign tissue happens during pregnancy ? in effect, a woman's immune system sees her fetus as foreign ? the condition disproportionally affects women.

It's hard to find compatible kidneys for these patients, and fewer than 7 percent receive transplants each year.

In the new study, the researchers filtered the blood of 211 hard-to-match kidney transplant patients, two-thirds of whom were women. First, the patients' blood cells were separated from the blood plasma. Then, patients received a new plasma supply, and new antibodies. The process was performed several days before the transplant and can continue for more than a week after surgery.

For each patient who received a transplant after this therapy, the researchers identified five patients on the kidney transplant waiting list with similar characteristics, to use as a control group.

After eight years, 80.6 percent of those who received the antibody therapy were still alive. Of those who remained on the waiting list, 30.5 percent survived. The long-term survival rate is low for those who remain on dialysis because the process puts a lot of wear and tear on the body, and can cause such complications as infections and high blood pressure, the researchers said.

"Dialysis is not a perfect replacement for a kidney," Montgomery said.

More transplants

Montgomery estimated that 20,000 kidney transplant patients in the United States fall into this hard-to-match group. He hopes the new data will boost the number of patients who receive the antibody therapy.

In all, there are about 85,000 patients waiting for a kidney, Montgomery said. While the antibody therapy won't completely solve the problem of organ availability, it may increase the number of patients getting? transplants, Montgomery said.

"It will help us to further optimize the organs that are available, that [otherwise] can't be used because of these incompatibilities," Montgomery said.

At this point, the therapy can be used only when the patient has a living organ donor, because the therapy needs to be done before the surgery, and patients who receive organs from deceased donors have little warning of when their organ will be available.

Review: No evidence of cancer-9/11 exposure in NYC (AP)

NEW YORK ? A federal review says scientific evidence thus far doesn't support adding cancer to a list of diseases linked to the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in New York City.

The review, required under federal law, is the first one of what will be a periodic investigation of scientific evidence on cancer and the exposure to contaminants at the World Trade Center site.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health released the report Tuesday, noting that "very little" has been published on the subject since the 2001 attacks.

The federal law was created to compensate those sickened after 9/11. Cancer-stricken ground zero workers do not qualify for aid under the multibillion-dollar act.

The next review will be released in 2012.

Anderson Cooper strikes balance with new TV duties (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Will Anderson Cooper be able to balance his duties as CNN's primetime star -- and frequent foreign correspondent -- with his new gig as a daytime talk show host?

Aside from queries about his upbringing, that was the question du jour during Tuesday's session with Cooper at the Television Critics Association's Summer Tour.

Cooper's answer? Yes -- without equivocation or reservation.

"We can do full daytime wherever I am or insert a live top," he said. "We have complete flexibility to respond to events as we see warranted."

More to the point, he already balances his contributions to "60 Minutes" and feels comfortable adding a far larger commitment, which "Anderson" will be.

"I manage my time very well," he said. "It's all very doable. It's a lot of work, but I like to work hard ... plus it's TV, so it's not like it's real work."

When one reporter pointed out Cooper would be missing tonight's show and suggested that his new job is already affecting his primetime show, Cooper said it would be just his seventh day of vacation all year -- and that he is sick.

"I get 30 days off a year...and I end the year without taking 10 days of vacation," he said. "I've left just about every vacation I've ever had to cover stories."

Sick or not, Cooper seemed to charm everyone in the room.

He joked about his New York studio seating 20,000 when in reality it holds 400. He said that Mariah Carey deserves a nightly TV program. Most popular of all, he put on a performance.

When asked about using social media, he said the show already had a Twitter page, Facebook page, YouTube channel and Tumblr. He then adopted the persona of an older woman and asked, "What else are the kids doing today? The Tumblr, exactly ... we're doing all the stuff on the internet." Applause followed.

Cooper assured the audience he has fully embraced social media -- Twitter in particular. He said it is now the first thing he checks in the morning for news, and the last thing he checks at night.

Yet if Cooper was definite about the show's social media engagement, he was less willing to commit when it came to format or style.

The focus will shift daily, and it could be one subject or several.

As more and more people asked whom he would be emulating, he said he would be stealing different bits from different hosts -- Phil Donahue, Ellen DeGeneres, Regis Philbin and even Oprah Winfrey.

He wants Donahue's audience engagement, Ellen and Regis' spontaneity and Oprah's range of topics.

In short, he wants the best of everything. (And who doesn't?)

The one subject on which he was particularly forthcoming was that of his childhood, something he has already written a book about. He discussed the loss of his father and brother, as well as all of the worldly people his mother introduced him to.
